If you are only going to use it for a year or two I would go for the D4 2HundredAndPlenty Kilowatt V8 Disco because I think they are good looking with all the bells and whistles and a lovely ride with the air suspension but (...and its a BIG but ... ) if you plan to keep it longer than its service plan then there is no way I would go that way! There are way too many elektronic gimmics and I have seen too many come back from holiday on a flatbed... Where are you going to get replacement tyres for those 18 to 20 inch rims in Nam, Moz or Botswana? I thought the 17's of the 4.8 GRX is already pushing it!
Long term I would go for the 4.8 Patrol which is totally under stressed (...where have you heard about a modern multi valve running a 9:1 compression ratio?...) 15 years is a minimum lifespan and you can hammer it everyday - it just responds with the minimum of electronics and over engineered transmission which won't let you down when the going gets tough as long as you do the basic maintenance.
You might be putting in a bit more fuel in the Trol than in the Disco but what the heck - you have already saved at least R80k!
I think decide what is important to you - piece of mind or bling - and go for it!

Yes David, I cannot see anyone buy a D3/D4 older than 2 years over a 4.8 Patrol.

Sonder om te bit as ek moet verby gaan of te hang laat dit vrek aan die stuur as die wind sy ding doen nie want die gewig/tou gewig is mooi gebalanseer. Betroubaarheid gaan jy nie wen nie en steel met nats is onmoondlik as jy nie n handelaar is met n totale rekord van jou kar nie en hulle moet als van hom he so verseker kan jy maar n tweede handse een ook koop want dan is die koop net soveel beter. Ek het n 4.2 wat oop le as jy wil kom ky Hoe goed lyk n nissan enjin na 390 000km van hard werk. Die goed hou van petrol maar hulle laat jou nie sommer staan nie

Dont worry about the vehicle , never mind it's a 4x4 that have won more awards world wide than any other vehicle ever produced.
the only vehicle that can tow 3.5 ton legally

Jules , ek is so n bietjie bang, is daar n flatbed op standby.
As ek dit soontoe maak sal ek daar wees, as ek nou nie complete electronic (gimmick )failure het nie

Miskien moet ek bly en die vuur aansteek en die bier koud hou, terwyl julle trailblazing.

Koos NO PROBLEM, ek bring MECHANIC GERRIT LOUBSER saam so hy sal ons wys waar om die GU aan die D3 te haak sodat jy hom sleep en as jy nog sukkel sal ek die GQ agter sit en jul altwee uithelp

My hak is ook swak, die boekie se ek mag net tot iets van 6 ton daarmee trek aan die onderstel , anderste breek hy saam met die chassis af. Daai Trols kan seker 60 ton trek aan hul chassis
Maar dit is n Landy , mens moet hulle (LAND ROVER ) nie glo nie miskien het hulle bedoel 0.6 ton.

Maar dankie "at least" is daar 2 x back ups.
