GU 4.2D engine shifted ???

I noticed that my passanger's side enigne mounting was a gonner and had shifted backwards, so off to the stealer (... I mean Dealer ) to buy a new mount.

I've just had it fitted and I went down to go fetch my car, and the workshop owner looks at me with a puzzled look on his face.
He tells me that the whole engine looks like it's moved back by at least 20mm.
The new mount just deformed as soon as the tension on the motor was released.

He checked the gearbox mountings, and they are locating just fine, it's just the motor that has moved.

Maybe I'm just not understanding this, but how if the engine is bolted to the gearbox & transfer box, can the engine just move and not the whole driveline ???

Any thought or similar experiences out there ?

Spooky!!! Surely there must be somewhere something else that moved but has not being picked-up yet with the eye.

Not familiar with the engine and layout.
Does the left and right have the same mount?, is the right also deformed now, or is the right ok, if the bracket on the engine is ok maybe something is starting to give on the body side mount.

Is it possible that the wrong set of holes again no knowledge of Patrol) was used when the gearbox was removed at some point. With a transfer case it is unlikely but i have seen manufacturers have extra holes for different engine variants and thus cater for different lengths by having extra sets of holes.

The body side is also deformed, but not broken yet.
The engine mounts are identical in design (same part used for both sides)

I also looked at the possibility of different holes used, but the Patrol only has 1 hole and index pin per mounting, on the enigne & the chassis.
The gearbox mounting system is the same.

That's why the workshop owner and I are so puzzled.
There's nothing we can see wrong, but yet the front mounts are deformed 20mm towards the rear of engine bay, telling us that the engine has moved ???

Hi,did you use the agent mounting for a replacement?
Reason for me to ask,I replaced my mountings with new recast rubber,not agent stuff,they did not had stock.The recast rubber last only a week and the enjin deform the mount.So they cast it from a more firm rubber compound,seems to hold now.

Sorry,I see now you bought a new mount from the agents,what did you pay?Whom fitted the mount the agent or a private workshop.No need to tell the name off the workshop,I am intrested if it was the agents or not.

Is it possible that they may have issued you with mountings designed for a petrol motor (ie: 4.5 / 4.8) ? Because usually Diesel motors are far heavier than its petrol equivalent, perhaps they manufacture mountings for diesel motors (stronger and stiffer than that of petrol motors) and different mountings for petrol motors (softer and lighter), in order to accommodate the difference in weight, hence the contortion of the mount?

Just a thought. I'm probably way wrong.....

I bought the origonal mounting from the agents, as I prefer to have origonal (vital) components.
I've had some bad experiences with pirate / remanufactured components in the past, and they just don't last as long as the manufacturer stuff.

The dealership rushed me R800 for 1 mounting.
I ordered it as per my VIN number, so that I wouldn't get it mixed up with a different model part.
I had a private garage fit it, as the dealer in PE is usless, and I know the guy who owns the workshop and he specialises in 4x4's and is very clued up.

My levers havn't moved, but I've noticed that 1st and 5th seem to be slightly on the tight side, hopefully it's just my paranoia kicking in.

Ok so you feel satisfied they issued the correct part. thats good. I must concur re your comment regarding PE dealership, just had my 90k service there, terrible, the story of which can be found elsewhere on this forum, however, i must admit that the treatment i received from Colin Sanderson (Service Manager or Workshop Manager) after throwing my weight around, was really great. i hope you get it sorted out. keep us posted.

My good friend was the Dealer Principal of Eastern Cape Nissan (PE)
He retired last year, but if I walk in and mention his name, people start falling over thier own feet to help me.
He even admitted that the service department is rubbish there.

The only guys you should trust with parts or info there is Winston (parts dept.) and Freddie (service manager), they know everything in that place.

I like to maintain my own vehicles, and I would have done it myself, but I have'nt got place to put my block & tackle in my new place and I would have needed an extra set of semi-skilled hands to get the job done.
Some jobs I don't mind paying for.
