The Brasso is more of a joke - over on the Nissan4x4.co.za forum, the guys were complaioning of an totally unexplained loss of engine oil on the VG 30 engines - that was when JohanSafari suggested to idle the engine with Brasso in the sump - then rinse with diesel, clean and it should be good [NOBODY has tried it yet ]
(Brasso is a chemical used to clean brass & copper objects [door knobs, uniform buttons, chrome bumpers and such - OH and Silvo cleans all your silver trophies

But you can use it in your case tumbler to make you cartridge cases nice and shiny, just make sure you clean it off afterwards

No never never use Brasso to clean your cartridge cases. Rather use Brillo - it does not contain ammoniac like Brasso. We no ammoniac and are bad on coper and brass.

Louis we are going helluve off-topic here, but Ammonia washes off in water. I just chuck my brass in the dishwasher after tumbling, and in those rifles that do not have stretchy actions I have never lost a case from embrittlement.

True; but when i was still doing a lot of competition shooting i lost many cases, while useing brasso and very time consumming to dry the cases, since i switched to Brillo no more split cases.

This method below is the one I used that I got from one of the guys on the Aussie site who owns and runs a fleet of Patrols that are used as "Adventure vehicles" for clients (4 of these Patrols have LSD's). Since the Paraffin isn't staying in your diff very long there isn't much chance for any seals to get damaged. The point of the tight circles is to try and get the LSD plates to grip and scrub themselves clean as the conventional diff oil impregnates surface of the friction plates and lubricates them. This prevents them from actually gripping and activating the locking action. It seems my Patrol was running conventional diff oil for at least 5yrs (I spoke to the mechanic who worked on it for the last 5yrs and he was like "oh...it has an LSD...I didn't know that...I just put normal diff oil in")

I've done ~50,000km's since I did this and the LSD is still working strongly. A little too strongly sometimes when it catches me out on wet days! I used Catrol LSX and if I remember correctly 5L cost me something like R300 (and the diff takes about 4l I think) and it still shows good viscosity/colour when I've checked it between services and after playing in the water. So as Ross says...the only side-effect I've had is a strong and effective LSD...

The method that we used to resurrect SRXy`s LSD was based on extensive research, and input obtained from the Aussie Patrol site. SRXy is overseas on business at the moment, but may still have the links to the specific posts saved somewhere...I`ll ask him when he gets back. Otherwise a bit of seaching on the Aussie site will probably unearth something similar to what I have outlined below:

Basically the method we followed was as follows:

1. Drain existing std diff oil, and refill diff with Paraffin.
2. Drive slowly to a parking area about 100m down the road and drive in circles (did approx 20 in each direction). The idea of this is to make the diff do some work, and to scrub up the friction plates. Note: The idea is to do this a lowish speed, not burnouts or doughnuts!!!
3. Drive slowly back to SRXy`s garage, drain paraffin, and re-fill with fresh paraffin and repeat step 2.
4. Drain paraffin again, flush diff with more parafin, allow to air dry for a few hours with both plugs removed, then refill with Castrol LSX
5. After approx 500km, Drain and Replace
6. By this Stage the LSD was back in action, and improved further over the next few weeks of driving with the correct oil.

Not sure how much mileage he has done since then, but its over two years ago since we did it and the only after effect is a working LSD.

I am going to try this on my bakkie's lsd.
Is Castrol LSX still the recommended oil to use?
