1996 4.2TD ST

Post by Koos »

Hi everyone, I'm posting this on behalf of my brother. Vehicle is in Cape Town.

I joined the forum some time back with the intention of buying my brother's '96 4.2TD ST....and joining the Patrol community and learning more from the Manne that know what they are talking about. I have been trying to convince him to sell the vehicle to me for the past few years, but no luck and in the meantime I bought a LC 105 4.5 EFI ...

He has finally decided to sell the vehicle after some bad luck with overheating and other mechanical issues. He bought the vehicle in the Northern Cape and when it was drove down, it overheated due to the radiator being blocked by grass seeds! He since had the engine completely redone, turbo, gearbox, clutch overhaul, new head, injectors, diesel pump, intercooler, EGT gauge, 25% bigger radiator (the list goes on..) but I do not know the exact specs of the rebuild. Please give him a call for further details. Honestly I think he is a bit "gatvol" with spending so much money on repairs over the last few years, but I think by now he attended to all possible mechanical issues with the ST!

I know he spend about R90 000 or more in repairs on the vehicle in the past few years and need to recover his expenses. He is looking at a smaller, cheaper, newer vehicle that needs less maintenance. hehe
Most of the repairs was done in house at my dad's workshop in Montague Gardens in Cape Town and some of the specialist work was outsourced.

IMHO I think he should rather keep the ST but, you know, what can I say.

As far as I know, he wants R120 000 to at least cover some of his expenses but think he is negotiable.

He has never registered the vehicle, as the traffic department told him the vehicle is a grey import??
This, after the vehicle was successfully registered and transferred between previous owners in the Northern Cape. So that is the only issue with the vehicle currently.

There is a person from Melkbos who wants to buy and strip the vehicle to use the chassis for his Navara. I told my brother he must rather try and sell the vehicle on this forum to someone who will really appreciate it for what it is. Stripping this vehicle will do it incredible injustice!!

Anyone in the club looking for a good example ST?

His name is Wilhelm de Klerk

Hi Koos

Hopefully you might be able to add some photos of the interior as well.
I know this may not be what Wilhelm wants to hear, but, as great as these cars are, it will be difficult to sell for more than 100k.
A pristine example of a GQ ST model with about 200k worth of extras on it, sold recently for not much more than that.
I know it does not make any logical sense, but that is the reality.

Given that it has had issues, which may or may not be resolved by now, can I suggest that you contact Frans Fourie ("Tour de Frans" on this forum).
In the Western Cape, he knows those cars and those engines the best, and has done some wonders with other 4.2 diesels.
If Frans give the car a thumbs up, that will do wonders for its ability to sell.

You can PM him on:

If you do not get hold of Frans, you can PM his dad at:

Hi Koos, I am afraid I agree with Alex on this one, I can not see anyone paying R120K for a patrol that they will not be able to register and drive on public roads, but I may be wrong

Best of Luck

Thanks for the advice Alex and Ian!
Much appreciated. Will pm Frans.

I'll carry the message over to my brother. I'm trying to help the oke, cause know he's gonna lose a lot of money.
I think he lost hope in the vehicle, because it's been repair after repair, but by now he has sorted out all the problems!
Still trying to convince him to rather keep this awesome vehicle, but he has lost faith in the old trol! I would love to own it, but can't afford to own the Cruiser and the Trol!

After engine rebuild, new Nissan head, intercooler, oil cooler, uprated radiator and EGT gauge, overheating problems is a thing of the past. Think only other thing would be to fit thicker exhaust. But understand that someone will rather want a vehicle with a virgin engine. ;) think his running .6 boost?

Will get him to send some more photo's..

You will have enough change to go on a long trip too!
