Hmmm, not what I heard. I heard if you advance o much it knocks like a bitch (like it swallowed a bolt) but it can handle it. Like its not an issue if you test drive and it knocks. Go home and retard it slightly.petrol wrote:Just be very carefull of to much timing, it might start to knock and then you say goodbuy motor.
Anyway if is running fine a bit of a hesitation every now and again... but that could be the fact that the fuel tank was almost empty.

Re: Low-ish power
Nope, at idle you will probably get away with it but full throttle it's a real engine killer. I would really recomend that you take the vehicle to Frans or another expert to set it properly for you.

Re: Low-ish power
Steve, I think you should start at a point and set the important things to the right settings.
Firstly I will set the timing correctly with a dial gauge so that you dont have to worry about that any more.
Seconly I will check the boost, you can buy a cheap boost gauge at most spares shops for under R200 and will tell you alot about what your turbo is doing.
A very simple test to do is to mesure the boost at the turbo and also at the intake manifold and compare the readings, they should not be miles apart.
Also check the thing on top of the diesel pump that gives extra fuel. Test it with your mouth by sucking on it, you will easily check if it is torn. The no boost setting on your pump might be set to high if this wasnt picked up

Forgot to mention
You can easily make a tool to check your pump lift (timing).
Took me about an hour and I can post pics of what I have

Re: Low-ish power
Backed off the timing about 2 degrees and everything is sweet. Smooth at idle when cold. The slight hesitation under revs with no load is gone. So quite happy with how everything is for now.
I have the Madman with boost and EGTs. Boost and EGTs are within spec. Although I need a long run with the caravan hooked up to be sure. With the internal waste gate disconnected it makes a max of 0.7Bar. This is a long term problem this troll has since I got it. Frans diagnosed it as a leaky waste gate but that has been checked and it is fine so that is still a mystery.
So this is what has been done:
Complete induction check for leaks or blockages
Complete exhaust check for blockages. (straight through so not much to go wrong).
Turbo reconditioned.
Timing checked (redneck style)
Compression check. This showed up a slight problem. The guy was concerned but did not think it was bad enough to do anything about yet. I cannot find the report now.

No way am I doing that myself with the engine in the the car. I will let a pro do that. I value the skin on my knuckles too much.Michael wrote:Forgot to mention

Re: Low-ish power
I have tried to find it but I would need to take of the heat shield to find a number. BUT if you are thinking the turbo is the wrong one, I think it is the OEM turbo as the heat sheilds all screw to the casing neatly and line up. No evidence of hacking to make it fit.
