Then I am going to play with the timing.
So I got around to playing with the timing.
I have been putting it off for a while as the pump is quite an intimidating piece of kit and the place I dropped it off at refused to look at the timing pointing at the turbo. Them "It is not making boost it must be the turbo" Me" the turbo has been reconditioned" Them "Ja well..."
So with great trepidation I made sure I could pull it out of the garage if it never started again, I located all the bolts. Adjusting the timing is the easiest thing I had ever done. I did not have the gauge so did it "redneck style" by free hand rotating the pump and taking it for a drive. My first observation was all the bolts were quite loose. My second observation was the pump was at the fully retarded position... I was starting to get very hopeful I had finally found the problem. So I rotated it as far as I could freehand against all the fuel lines and attachments. Tightened it up and went for a spin.
Immediately I felt the lowdown power was MUCH better. (I could back up the driveway without reving the crap out of it). Immediately boost was much lower down and up to 0.4 where the waste gate opens. So I made two more advancements on the timing and it got better and better. And almost no smoke now (it is still over fueling but I will get the timing right and then play with the fuel). The last adjustment was with an old hockey stick and ratchet strap to get the pump to rotate further against the fuel lines. The last adjustment left a slightly ruff run in a portion of the rev range. So I think I am on the limit. To go further I will need to loosen the fuel line brackets. And I ran out of time.
So anyway looking much better and hope restored.
So someone had adjusted the timing previously and not tightened the bolts properly. So I think the timing had slowly been retarding itself. Then When I did some work looking for a clogged mesh on the inlet to the pump, the action of pinching up the inlet banjo bolt I probably inadvertently rotated the pump to fully retarded position. It seems like a bolt on the bottom bracket that holds the pump is missing. I am guessing because the Ausssie forums mention a 4th bolt that is difficult to get to. I found the bracket and what looks like a nut welded to teh bracket, not being a gynecologist means I couldn't get to it but as teh pump rotates with just the 3 nuts loosed the 4th must be missing.
