Starter - uithaal ?????

Post by offroadbiker »

Dirk,

Beste plek is Caelex in Soutter str in Pretoria wes. Hulle sal baie moontlik een in vooraad he teen n billike prys.

Groete
Chris.

This is sort of on and off topic. Since I've had my patrol (4.8GL) I've had to remove the starter nearly every 9 months for a clean up. Mine starts the spin on or make funny noises. I think the problem is exasperated by the PO's use of clutch as there was a fair amount of clutch dust in the starter. on friday a new thing started, there was nothing no click, niks nada zilch. a few judicious slaps with a piece of lumber and it cracked into life.

A quick description of how to take it out:
On the GU if yo have a 2 inch lift then you don't have to jack it up. From the top , disconnect battery, disconnect battery cable on starter (12mm) and solenoid wire . I use a 3/8 inch drive socket 14mm with 6 inch extension. cracked the 2 nuts and undo. i normally get the socket in place for the top bolt from the top and then get underneath to finish. I completely remove the top bolt and the start on the bottom one. The bolt threads on mine is clean so if the starter is in it's place then they turn by hand (on socket extension), so once underneath I can remove the bottom while keeping the weight of the bottom bolt.

The 4.8 uses a reduction starter, very small, barely bigger than a wiper motor but heaver. interesting no stator coils , only rotor coils . I normally clean and grease the planetary gear set and put it back and runs for another 9 months. This time I decided to check the commutator and brushes as well.

Looks like after nearly 200k the brushes are done. I've attached a pic of what they look like new. Does anyone here by any chance know where to get them. Mine stick out about 3mm so i can say they are well worn.

Has any one recently tried to get brushes here in SA?
