I know it is an old subject, but let me go again! I am going to replace the tyres on my GRX, 4.8. I lifted the suspension with 50mm - TJM. What is the biggest size tyre I can put on without being silly? I looked at 33" tyres on a 16" rim but have decided to stick to the 17" rim size - must say the 33" fill the wheel arch very nicely. Any advise please!!!
Irrespective of rim size, the 33" tyre is definitely the way to go. Fills the wheel arch perfectly, without catching anywhere. Gives an extra 1" total diff lift ( if standard tyres of 31" were fitted previously ).
I'm just not sure of the tyre size on a 17" rim. I believe you can fit 35" tyres comfortably on a patrol, especially with a 2" lift, but the power drain due to the now much larger tyres is a bit harsh, and it makes it a problem on an auto g/box. The g/box will be hunting for gears constantly. Diff ratio gear change will rectify that, but not the power drain.... as far as I'm aware.
just thinking now.... 33" might also give an auto g/box a bit of grief, causing gear hunting. So possibly gear ratio change needed too.... Maybe the 4.8 guys with 33's will be able to correct me....
I know of several 4.8 (auto and manual box) drivers who are happy with the 33" (285 / 75 /16 for your rims).
The problems of gear searching and loss of power only seem to become problematic when going bigger than this.
The 50mil lift will also help you not biting into the wheel arches when twisting the axles.
Anything bigger only improve looks in my view, unless you are prepared to spend much more on gear changes.
Sorry, I have just relaised that you drive a GQ.
The 33" does fit into the GQ wheel arch, but only just. With reference to Grant's GQ, it is the biggest you can go on tyres without significantly more suspension lift or modifying your arches.
Thanks for the info guys. The tyres are actually for my other Patrol, a 2011, 4.8GRX (GU) with 17" rims on it. Saw some tyres yesterday on a Jeep, 17" rims with 285/70/17 - would this be equivalent to 33"? I've heard the stories around power loss and are concerned, or should I not worry too much with 33" tyres?

Hi Dawid, I have 305x70x17 BFG mud terrains on my 2010 GRX, these are 34" and fit without any rubbing or problems even when going hard to "port or starbooard"

Not noticed any change in power... still plenty there! Speedo remains accurate when compated to GPS.
My Trol has a full Old Man Emu suspension kit and lift... not sure of exact mm lift as I took possision of the car with suspension changed from stock to OME.
Regards,
Peter

hi
dawid on the form has 285/70/17 on he is happy !!!
the size is as close to 33 as you will get
watch out for peterv size if your patol has standard syspension it might tuch but not sure
i can ask autowiel to give you aforum price if u want just pm me
As Tinus said - 285/70/17's (33") are the right size for the 4.8 as it fills the wheel arches nicely without going over the top.
Your solid spare wheel cover will however no longer fit as it can only take a max size of 265 and your 0 to 100 time will be .00023 seconds slower.
This is a no brainer - the positives far outweigh the negatives as you score with better ground clearance under your axles which will improve your offroad progress and last but not least it will look better .
