Hi Peter,

I've replaced the flimsy rear loop with a nice solid mouting, made by G-Man, that takes a 4 ton bow shackle. I'm actually looking for 2 recovery points for the back and 2 for the front that can take the 4 ton shackles to spread any potential load more evenly. (I've got the high-lift wheel buddy which works a treat.)

Hello Stefan

Do you have a towbar on your car? If you do, you could drill a couple of big holes in the mounting plates at the sides, under the car. However, I doubt this is necessary, as the normal recovery hook bolts straight into the rear chassis crossmember, and there are also triangulating members supporting that chassis crossmember.

However if you want one I will sooner or later build a proper rear bumper with a carrier for a second spare wheel for Oom Mac, and I will certainly build in some decent recovery points.

On the front you have two options I can think of: Get a lekker bullbar which has decent recovery points built-in, or get a local engineering shop build you a mirror-image of the existing front tow hook and mount it on the left-hand chassis rail.

When it comes to using a hi-lift jack, being able to jack on the bumpers allows you to do something that you cannot do with a wheel buddy. Let me explain: The biggest problem with a hi-lift jack is that it is very unstable, but in a weird way that is also the thing that makes it unbeatable as a recovery tool. Because you can jack the car up, and then put it down next to the place it was standing in before. This feature has got me unstuck more than once.

Cheers
Peter

Hi Peter,

I have a Ball & pin towball, so effectively I have 2 recovery points in the middle of the vehicle directly below one another. From your explanation, it would seem that these are sufficient.
The replacement rear bumper sounds good, however I would continue to use the spare mounted on the rear door with a second rear-mounted spare carries for long trips. (Can't see this being a permanent fixture as the Patrol is our daily run-around)

I'd love to get a lekker bullbar, at the moment I hope that 2 recovery points will work out slightly cheaper. I'm partial to the closed hole design that one can bolt a shackle to, as the risk of the strap coming loose is reduced. Maybe a local engineering shop is the way to go.

100% on the use of the highlift, provided you have a replacemenr bumper in front. At the rear I have 2 High-lift jacking points, but the one under the spare is not useable, so one in the middle seems a better (but more dangerous) option.

Hello Stefan

That is probably the way my rear bumper will work (keeping the standard spare on the door and adding an extra in such a way that the bracket can be removed when not required).

If you are prepared to replace the existing front towhook with a 10mm plate with 4 holes in (three for mounting and one for the shackle) that should work a treat. If you want me to I am prepared to make you a drawing and mail it to you by say friday?

If you want to use the hi-lift as discussed, it must be in the middle, and with a car as heavy as the Patrol, you will probably need a couple of guys to help you hold it straight until you have lifted it high enough.

Peter

Hy het al so twee of drie keer my bas gered!
