Speedometer dead

Post by stobi_de »

After a long time: hi again.
I have not been in your country since more than 17 month - the reason should be known....

So I have only a question concerning my german Patrol (y60, 1992, RD28, LHD, rear diff lock)
Some weeks ago I noticed a "strange" speed: in the middle of the city it showed 140 hm/h. Then 180, then nothing.
OK, I bought a new used speedometer - different behavior: most times 0 or 80.
I removed the speedometer sensor and the pinion (correct word?) insider the gearbox. Pinion seems to be OK. I checked the sensor: seems to be OK. I see some volt on the voltmeter. oscilloscope says OK.
But I ordered a new one in Dubai: but same results. I used a drill on the sensor to check the function: but nothing.

So the only idea: both speedometers are broken or a broken cable.

But how can I check a broken cable? The 2 cables of sensor are vanashing somewhere in the "cable-collection" (do not know the correct word) and they come back in 4 big plugs.
I have a electric plan, but there are 2 different possible types.

I tired to connect a sensor directly to the speedometer, without success - and the question is: did I connect correct?. Maybe works only when everything is connected? but then I can not connect my cable from the speedometer.

HELP NEEDED IN GERMANY!
Frank

(the first pic shows the bought used speedometer. Normally I do not disconnect plugs this way  )

That is very strange. I thought it may be a bad solder joint, but you've tried other dash clusters, so that can't be the problem. Could possibly be a bad earth from the dash cluster to battery.

So, I have the solution:
the original and the spare speedometer had exavtly the same issue. How big is the chance to get the same problem in 2 different parts? Big enough!
After repair (3 weeks and 400 Euro urgh...) of the speedometer everything OK again.

And of course the dealer of the spare speedometer says: everything was OK when he shipped it
