Tyre options and advice for my 2014 4.8 GRX Patrol
Hi Guys
I’m new to this forum and Patrols, and I need some input wrt tyre setup on my Patrol.
From what I can gather, 285/70/17 seems to be the recommended size to upgrade to. I want to gain some side wall height for better deflation, without having to do a host of secondary modifications. I just have a few questions.
1. Does 285/70/17 fit and not catch anywhere under full wheel articulation on the stock suspension. I’ll look at upgrading the suspension in time, first tyres.
2. Are there any segnificant power losses and increased fuel consumption?
3. I read somehwere that when putting on bigger tyres, there might be issues with the torque converter on the auto box ‘slipping’ and that a differential regearing mod would be recommended. Would this be applicable for 285/70/17 or only for 35inch or bigger?
4. Anything else I should pay attention to in this regard?
5. I’ve been using BFs for the last 10 years and have been happy with their performance. They have become quite pricy, so if anybody has some other recommendations, shoot.
Looking forward to your replies.
Thx

The 33" is a good upgrade & will not rub. You won't notice any power loss or extra consumption, your speedo will also read more accurately.
I have done this personally & can recommend it.

33's on a 4.8 is not my field of expertise as I'm a diesel polluter...
But I have 33" Kumho MT51's on my 4.2 diesel for just under 2 years now. My rims are 16" and not 17", but I'm sure Kumho MT51's come in 17" too. Personally I love them. I use my Patrol as a daily drive, and obviously for holidays and off-road. On all 3 I have not regretted using them for a second. Great in wet, absolutely brilliant on the rough stuff (and I do enjoy a little rough stuff... 4x4 wise of course), and actually the quietest muddies I've ever had on my Patrol !! Then more importantly the price was excellent in comparison to the "better known" brands.
Check on Lombard Tyres website. They are the agents that bring them in.

The 285/70/17 work fine. No NEED to go bigger. If I, personally, were to go taller for sidewall height I'd change from 17 to 16 inch rims as well to make it worth the effort.
The diff ratio conversion is nice to have on the 4.8 though, regardless of what tyres you put on. Standard diff gearing on it is not ideal.Tinus (here on the forum) is the guy to talk to get that sorted

Not sure if 16" rims fit on the 4.8 though. I think the brake calipers are a fraction bigger than the older 4.5 and 4.2 GU Patrols

Tinus Lotz can arrange Maxxis or CST, at very reasonable prices
I am imminently putting on CST 285/70R17s, organised by him, on my 4.8. Changing up from Dunlop 285/65/R17s
std is +10

Does having a negative offset rim help this?

16" rims work fine on the 4.8
Its the 15" that rubs the calipers

Great, thanks guys, so 285/70/17 is the way to go. I’ll look into the Kumho muds and the Maxxis, thx.
Good to know that 16inch would fit, but I’ll probably stick to the 17inch rims though. I do need an extra rim or two though. Any ideas where I might be able to source 1 or 2 of the same 17inch alloy rims?

He's your man for most patrol parts new & second hand.
He may have a spare 17" rim for you.

Just one question Remo: do you tow a heavy van?
Most people who complain about the gearing on larger tires tow fairly heavy vans/boats/etc.
