My Patrollie Cyl Compression after 850 000 km

Post by Dungbeetle »

It is May - the month in which I replace glow-plugs

This time decided to do (the first) compession test sommer while the glow plugs are out

I was amazed that all cylinders are (from what I can see) still within spec !!
More importantly, no sigificant delta between adjacent cylinders.

Any comments from the experts - am I looking at the correct spec?

No special service schedule - I just sort of follow (more inspect than really replace) what is in the service manual - many downloads availabe on this and other Patrol forums

I even stretch it - oil and filter changes only every 10 000 km (not 7500km - that is for 500ppm diesel and old oil specs)
and
I do not use expensive oils - I go for the Indy Oil, Midas/Autozone etc house brands 15W40
I do use large capacity oil filters - GUD Z34 (designed for construction equipment and vehicles)

But, I try to avoid revs over 3000

Check thermostat regulary and only fit Geniune Nissan part here.

The compression is oustanding and I have recorded the same velues in many Patrols over 500,000km

Just a question, did you record the reasings with the injector pump disconnected, or just with the glow plugs out?
The manual states that one should disconnect the fuel solenoid wire of the pump so the compression is measured with "dry" cylinders.

Engine was warm but not fully at normal operating temperature
All glow plugs out
Fuel cut of solenoid disconnected
Cranked the engine between 10-12 seconds every time
I have an aftermarket starter - no idea at what rpm it cranks the engine (spec says test at 200rpm)

Baie interessant so wat is die korrekte API grade oil vir die TD42, my GQ manual sê CC of CD, maar is nie beskikbaar meer, behalwe die Midas SAE40 monograde wat ek sover gesien het.

Midas multi grade is CH-4, Shell R4 CI-4, Valvoline CI-4.

My comments here apply to the NA TD42 (I cannot comment on the turbo'd version)

I do have the t-shirt to say:

The TD42 engine was designed when Diesel with 500ppm sulphur and oils with CF-4 specs were available (pre-1995).
CG-4 oils were discontinued in 2009 and replaced with CH-4 (from 2008)

Today the latest spec that includes all control parameters from CG-4 and all the beneficial improvements thereafter is CJ-4

So you can use all oils from CH-4 right up to CJ-4 - an blah blah to all the sales talk out there.

Meaning buy the best priced Multigrade CH-4 up to CJ-4 you can get your hands on (regardless of the brand name)

AND
At your own discretion:
Because we now have 50ppm (and lower) fuel, better oils than CG-4, you can opt to stretch the service interval from 7500 - 10 000 km
I have done for this so long can't remember since when

AND
I do use large capacity oil filters such as GUD Z34 (Can't tell if it really makes a difference, but does make me feel better)

AND
Uncle Wikipedia says the TD series engines were first manufactured in 1986 !!! (TD42 probably since 1988)
