Forum and Tapatalk
Folkses - just a howto to get operating on Tapatalk.
Firstly, you will need to install Tapatalk on your mobile phone.
The Android application link is: https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... y&hl=en_ZA
Apple iPhone application link is: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/tapatalk- ... d307880732
Once installed, when you open Tapatalk, you will get the following screen. In this case, you will notice I'm following two other forums on Tapatalk - 4x4Community and Patrol4x4.com.
Click on the "Add More" button, and search for Patrol 4x4 Africa. You will see the Nissan Patrol4x4 (Africa) item as per the screenshot below. Click on "it".
The home page for the forum will load, and there will be a prominent "Follow" button. Click on this.
Now that you are following the forum, the forum will have two options: "Register", and "Login". Click on "Login", and enter your forum username and password.
You will not be authenticated to the forum.
Now, when you open Tapatalk, the Patrol forum icon should appear on the first page of Tapatalk.
When you click on it, you will enter the forum on the home page.
The buttons on the top of the page mean the following.
First button, home page. Second button, the Forum "structure".
Third button shows the current posts. On this page, you can filter threads based on whether they are new posts, unread posts, subscribed and participated threads. In the image below, I'm viewing "Unread posts".
The last two buttons at the top of Tapatalk are for private messages and "alerts" (ie: should somebody quote you, or reply to a subscribed thread / similar).
Clicking on a thread will open the thread. Clicking on the "reply" button at the bottom right, will allow you to reply to the thread. Add images, etc.
If you need to edit your post, click on your post, and click on the toolbox icon at the top of the screen.
That is more or less the basics of getting started with Tapatalk. Please shout if there are any other questions.

Re: Forum and Tapatalk
Oh. One other thing. The 'Like' functionality of the forum does not seem to be available on Tapatalk currently. I will figure out why and get this working at some point.

Thanks for your continued efforts to maintaind and improve the forum Ian.
Just a stupid question though: how is Tapatalk better than just accessing the forum through Google?

Re: Forum and Tapatalk
Peter, thanks. However, I enjoy keeping the forum ticking. Not really an effort at all. :)Peter Connan wrote:Thanks for your continued efforts to maintaind and improve the forum Ian.

As for Tapatalk:
Most of my posting on the forum is done from my laptop with a browser. However, I am lucky in that I am permanently working on a laptop and generally do not have restricted Internet during the day. Other members are not so fortunate, and access the forum via their cellphones, as they do not work in offices, or have restricted Internet. Whilst I have made a lot of effort to ensure the forum works nicely with mobile phone browsers, it is still a lot more difficult to interact with the forum from a cell phone, and some of the technologies in use just don't play nicely with mobile phones. It works, but not always perfectly. In some cases, members will go to great lengths to write a forum post and upload photos, only to have their session timeout (requiring reauthentication) as they make their post from their phone. And then they lose the entire post and have to start from scratch. This is apparently one of the reasons we see massive activity on the Patrol ZA Whatsapp and Facebook groups in comparison to the forum. Whilst I am not complaining about that, it does mean that the forum potentially misses good content too. Where it is saveable and searchable and similar. It is, after all, a reference library as well as a social media hangout.
The idea of implementing Tapatalk was to provide a more robust manner for members to interact with the forum from a mobile device. The benefit being that it is easier to post on the forum from Tapatalk on a cellphone than from a web browser and some of the other gremlins (session timeouts and similar) also go away. And what is really great about it is, that despite making use of a third-party mobile app, Patrol forum content remains Patrol forum content. I see it as a win-win, ultimately.
In short, forum members can decide what client to use to interact with the forum. The choice is theirs, and forum content will remain the same across different clients. However, I am hoping that the Tapatalk option will coerce some of the more mobile-bound members (who have nagged me about this for months) to post more.
Finally, I will be at the Moegatle outing. If there are any members still battling to get started with Tapatalk, please let me know when I am there. If necessary, I can always do a quick info / intro session.

Re: Forum and Tapatalk
Thanks Ian.
I access the forum mostly by phone nowadays (in fact I'm on it now), but my serious posts are always done from the laptop as I prefer the keyboard and that's where the photos are anyway. Thus I had not experienced timeouts.
In fact the only issue I have ever had with accessing through the phone is that I can't see where the signatures and member info off to the side.
My phone is constantly complaining about running out of memory, so I have issues with loading and running apps, which is the reason for the question...
