Lesotho and Snow......

Post by NISMOnator »

Hi Almal,

Ok so we are thinking of doing a Lesotho trip, like go up Sani Pass? We want to give the kids the snow experience, but don't know if this is the best place to go and do it?

We will only have a long weekend like in 4 days max to do this? Thinking about safety and going on own getting stuck due to heavy snow fall if we are so lucky?

Things to ask:

Is it safe?

What time will the best time to do it? End June start July?

Should we be two vehicles going up?

Is there another place to go for the same experience with a bit of 4x4 other than Sani Pass?

What do we need? Passports etc?

Thanks :helpsign:

Here is some good info from the trips we have done.

Things to ask:

Is it safe? Yes, Petty crime is everywhere, but I felt safe.

What time will the best time to do it? End June start July? If it's cold, pack quick and go...hahaha.... Timing is difficult to predict.

Should we be two vehicles going up? I would DEFINITIVELY recommend two or more CAPABLE vehicles with proper recovery equipment and recovery points

Is there another place to go for the same experience with a bit of 4x4 other than Sani Pass? We went up SANI pass, slept over in Mokhotlong and then through to Afriski for the day, and then out through Caledonspoort border post. No real 4x4 so to speak, but driving up SANI with solid ice on a hairpin bend with NO guard rails to stop you going a loooooooong way down is pretty scary.

What do we need? Passports etc? Passports, Car Registration papers, kids Unabridged birth certificate ( If step kids involved, then a downloaded document from the Home Affairs website filled in by the parent that is not going to be there giving permission, and must be certified.
Regards
Cedric

Keep an eye out for snow reports on social media, they will let you know when there will be snow in Lesotho.

I was there in July 2012 for a work trip, went up the Monday morning after people snowed in and got stuck on the passes:

(I tried to embed the video but without success....)

Things to ask:

Is it safe? Yes.

What time will the best time to do it? End June start July? Lookout for the snow reports.

Should we be two vehicles going up? I would recommend two or more vehicles with proper recovery equipment and recovery points. Also extra food, water and something as simple as a candle to keep you warm in the vehicle should you be snowed in.

Is there another place to go for the same experience with a bit of 4x4 other than Sani Pass? I went through the Caledonpoort border, up Moteng Pass and Tlaeng Pass. Not realy a 4x4 experience but still nice. If you want to do 4x4, I would suggest Sanie Pass but be CAREFUL of black ice

What do we need? Passports etc? All the documents as recorded by ricster.

Another option is to go with Francois Rossouw. He is doing a Lesotho snow tour on the long weekend of Woman's day in August and takes the group through the heart of the snow area. The downside is when we went on the tour we were in a group of 35 vehicles and barely any snow. Have a look on his website www.4x4sport.co.za or contact him on info@4x4sport.co.za
