Roof tent shed find and fittment

Post by Craig Lord »

Hi guys

After starting our new job in the tuli block in Bots one of my first projects was cleaning out my new workshop and shed. While doing this I came across an Eezi Awn 1800 series 3 RTT burried under years of horded rubbish. The tent clearly had been packed away years ago and forgotten, it was covered in all types of crap and smelled like it too Haha

Anyway I asked for it and was given it for mahala so I figured it's fine if I open it and it's been rat eaten and not salvageable. Turns out it was the opposite lucky for me.

I then had to figure out how to fit it to my roof rack which was never designed to carry a RTT. Unfortunately that meant taking an angle grinder to the roof rack but I am going to replace it next year so I didnt mind to much, it's made from mild steel and its heavy...

After removing the right hand and front rails and painting I then made a wooden frame for the tent to sit on. The tent is secured to the frame which is bolted to the steel cross members of the rack. Yes it was propped up on dust bins as per proper african procedure :rolling:

After a good clean it looks much better, almost new. We used a block and tackle from the workshop roof to lift it onto the patrol and it was done. We have never slept in a RTT before but we are looking forward to testing it out and seeing if it's something we like or not. Bit worried about having to pack it away everytime we want to go on a game drive but it might not be so bad. Its missing the fly sheet but I've ordered one from Hi Range here in Bots. Overall R2000 all in isn't bad going I think :blonde:

R2000! Didn't realize dustbins are that expensive in Bots! :imsorry:

Lekker man, hope you enjoy it.

I have long ago decided that there is no perfect camping solution for every trip, but there are some types of trips where a RTT is the very easiest option.

At some point in time I am going to come knocking for Tuli block accommodation info. It's an area I still need to get to.
Mag ons ons kenniskry met lekkerkry aanhoukry.

Haha treat the dust bins here like gold ! Peter you can look at the campsite at Tuli River lodge. It's on the limpopo river and very beautiful. I'm not sure that you will be able to do any self drive game drives through the park though. You may have to book a game drive through the lodge. As far as I know that is the only campstite in the tuli game reserve, the rest are lodges as far as I know it's well worth a vist as one destination on a longer trip into bots or for a long weekend as it's only 5 hours from PTA.
When in doubt throttle out !
