I must say that I haven't had a look around on the forum regarding TB42 engines and the power they can produce.
They are mostly categorised in the reliable segment of comments, but I was surprised to come across the fact that in Australia there are a lot of TB42's that are doing Winch Truck Racing (that is an insane event).
I watched a YouTube video of a guy making his old TB42 winch truck into a touring vehicle. He put it on the Dyno.
Video here:
For those that aren't into watching these type of things I will post a screenshot of the dyno results.
My question- if one can pick up a TB42 so cheap, how much would one need to spend to create something like this? Would it be basically that you would have to replace everything on a GQ? Any ideas?
And what is water meth injection?

Re: TB42 Turbo Power
There is nothing the TB42 can do that your TB45 can't. In fact, it is very similar in most respects. All you want from the TB42 is the con-rods.
Water meth is a great way to boost power for short periods as it lowers combustion temperatures. I think it's first major usage was by the Germans in their WW2 fighter aircraft. But on a touring car, I doubt it's of much use.
Another thing to keep in mind is keeping that much power cool. I don't think the GU's cooling system is going to cope unless that power is used for relatively short periods.

Re: TB42 Turbo Power
Thanks guys for the replies
I was more blown away by the fact that a TB42 can produce 570nm at the wheels , than what I have the urge to do it to my TB45E. I think I would rather (if I "need" to have more power, probably buy a TB48 and turbo that). How much percentage power gain is that for a TB42?
Maybe it's just me, but I will now always glimpse under the bonnet to see if there is a carby, if I see a TB42 for sale....what I will do if there isn't I don't know
It's great to hear there are people that are extracting the potential of the TB42. There are some very skilled people in RSA
Nissan seems to have made all the engines ever placed in a patrol very tunable (3.0 and the new 5.6 included).

Re: TB42 Turbo Power
Hellboy is a turboed 4.2, he is a full import so came with fuel injection, Tinus think you are a bit out on the costs, its about R70-75K about R10K cheaper than a 4.8. Peter yes you are correct I run a second radiator to keep things cool. I am running a very low boost of 0.3 (my one has an auto box which without spitsronics does not like the power) it was turbo'ed before I bought it but tuned for sea level so sent it to Thys (pre tune it was putting out 70KW on the wheels after tune 130KW) yes if you turn up the boost it will go much higher that that. Only trouble I have had is I blow my head gasket but I think it worped as hellboy stood for too long
