Craig Lord wrote: 26 Feb 2020 10:43 I run the national luna 25amp dc/DC charger with a blue nova lithium 100amp hour deep cycle battery in the national luna box. Charges up the battery from 30% to full in just over 3 hours drive. It can also take power from a solar panel. With this I run 2 Waeco CF 50 fridges, on as a freezer and one as the fridge and the rest is used to charge up various things. The battery ran the fridges for 3 full days in a test I did at home, could have gone more but I got over waiting Haha Couldnt be happier with the setup, I've never had an issue with charging. Best advise is spend the bucks on a good battery and DC DC charger. Dont watse time with the solenoid system the DC DC does this for you also.

Edit: the national luna 25 amp DC/DC charger also caters for lithium batteries.

Can't compare a DC-DC charger with the NL solenoid system. The fact that NL are now selling DC-DC systems shows that even they are aware of the limitations.

Ian, I am not saying they can't work or that they are unreliable if operated carefully.

What I am saying is that they cannot fully charge deep-cycle, lead crystal, AGM or Li-Ion batteries. The car's alternator simply doesn't produce the required voltage.

I think I'm gonna unplug all necessary plugs so that the Red BH fits into one side of that battery box, and the Grey one in the other.

Then stand WELL away and see what happens.

The explosion cannot be THAT big, and the Trols are tough buggers, the car's body should contain most of the blast impact.

Will keep you Guys posted. Well, probably.

Petri something doesn't look 100% to me. Can you confirm where the black wire on the solenoid unit is going to? Should be on the negative terminal on main battery.

Tinus - you right I guess, there are better systems/products available, but ag wat - this will do for us.

I have solar also, and I really MUST have the portability of a battery box, we prefer the fridge outside the vehicle, either in the caravantjie or then the Oztent(s).

I have the utmost faith in my national luna box with the 25amp DC/DC charger and blue nova deep cycle battery. Charges it up from 30%to full in under 4 hour drive and with the solar panels connected during the day I have endless power. 2 fridges and multiple other 12v things no issues. I think it really depends on the battery you have. Lithium charges way faster than others.. :mytwocents:
When in doubt throttle out !
