My Dual Battery Setup - Help Please

Post by petri oosthuizen »

I got a NL dual battery system with the GRX that I bought 2 weeks ago, that has since crept into my heart and lovingly called "Olive" - see here

It has a battery box (removable/portable) that is not connected now.

If I may ask a few questions please. I', asking them one by one, with accompanying pic(s).

QUESTION ONE...……….

The battery monitor shows 2 green dots, but there's only one battery connected now. Why is that?? Or would it light up "normally" if the battery box is also connected??

Pic attached. The lights show GREEN, not YELLOW (pic may look yellow)

Thanks.

Then, in the engine bay, the NL Solenoid thingy does not light up at all, when the car is idling or not. Car has not idled long though, is there a specific "time relay" after which things will light up??

Or is it, one again, because the second battery is not connected?

Pics attached.

Thanks a Mill, appreciate.

The Battery Box is home made (very nicely done), with red and grey BH plug outside, and 2 Hella outputs on top (visible on pic, red on top, grey at the bottom), they plug in "outside" the box.

Another view of Battery Box, it has 2 Hella outlets at the top, and yes, again, the red and grey BH plugs either side of the outside "handle"

Petri, the National Luna's much vaunted "intelligence" is simply a timer that waits a while before engaging the solenoid.

Personally, I am not a fan of that system. It's OK for charging crank batteries, but cannot charge a deep-cycle or any of the fancy modern batteries fully. Personally, I would rip it all out and ask Ant for a quote for a proper system.

Can't agree with you there Peter, I have run the NL system in many vehical for many years and never had a problem with them. Petri that loop looks like a fuse holder between the two BH plugs why it is done like that with so many BH I have no idea

I run the national luna 25amp dc/DC charger with a blue nova lithium 100amp hour deep cycle battery in the national luna box. Charges up the battery from 30% to full in just over 3 hours drive. It can also take power from a solar panel. With this I run 2 Waeco CF 50 fridges, on as a freezer and one as the fridge and the rest is used to charge up various things. The battery ran the fridges for 3 full days in a test I did at home, could have gone more but I got over waiting Haha Couldnt be happier with the setup, I've never had an issue with charging. Best advise is spend the bucks on a good battery and DC DC charger. Dont watse time with the solenoid system the DC DC does this for you also.

Edit: the national luna 25 amp DC/DC charger also caters for lithium batteries.
