Patrol Pickup 4.2D Tyres......advice?!

Post by Russ Kellermann »

Chaps, morning,

Ok, i've got a 07 Patrol Pickup 4.2D (Normally aspirated). It currently has 235. 85. 16 tyres on it. My other 4x4 (Isuzu 280DT DC LX) is running on 31. 10.5. 15 (Kumho KL71's) muddies, and i freaking love these tyres. It my second set and i got 83000km out the first and they are super aggressive. I am wondering what the other 4.2D chaps pout there are running with, as i'd love to stick some muddies on my truck soon as. Should i go to 33" (does the 235. 85 16 translate to 32" ???) . Obviously , with a 4.2D dog motor, i cant afford to loose a heap of power as there is little enough as it is. Also, do any of you guys run Kumho KL71's on your trolls, or know of any cruiser boys who do? and your thoughts.

All responses welcome.

Cheers
Russ

If you worried for power with the 4.2,stay away from 33's,even mudder's for that matter. :mytwocents:

Yip, 235/85R16 tyres are very close to 32" nominally.

Hi Russ

I've got 31x10.5R15's on my 1998 4.2D Pick-up, and they go just fine - unfortunately on 10J rims, so they look good but do not perform well off-road (Bridgestone Duellers - a good tyre). It runs at 140km/h with ease.
I used to have BFG 33x12.5R15 MT's on, but they were a little bit to wide and scraped on the inside of the vehicle when I turned. Excellent tyre though.
As Tour de Frans mentioned, 33's will make your vehicle run slower and increase your fuel consumption. Mt's make more noise. Consider the BFG A/T tyres. My one friend runs them on his Hilux, and he's been just about everywhere were everyone else with MT's went - and even further. The new BFG M/T's, according to an Aussie article i've read, was voted their best tyre - beating even the Mickey Thompsons (Probably MTZ's).
The 265x75R16 is closer to a 32". You can also look at the 285 tyre. The 235's are a smaller tyre - I have them on my Defender, but went absolutely everywhere with them (BFG M/T's). A fatter tyre would look better on the Patrol - again, with your 16" rims look at the 265 or 285 BFG AT's - Tiger Wheel & Tyre had a good price on them. The Hancook M/T has the same tread as the older BFG M/T's and cost even less.
As for myself, I'm going to fit a 2" suspension lift (OME) soon, and have already ordered my 33x12.5R15 BFG M/T Km2's, as I'm using the vehicle mostly around town and would like to do more 4x4ing with it - and I've got a red Hilux's behind to kick... :rolling:

Hey Pierre,

Thanks for your story. I'm not bothered about noise, like i said, i use Kumho kl71's on my isuzu, and they got massive lugs. The kumho was voted worlds best off road tyre 2009 and believe me they not wrong. will try get them again, i dont like how BFG seem to chip. I see no point in having a 4x4 unless you running muddies, but thats just me.

Anyway, gonna see what happens, just dont have time and energy at the moment to change but i will in the next few weeks i'm sure.

cheers guys

Hi Russ, this is quite an old thread, but did you get the kl71's? What tyres do you have on your troll now?

Those KL71 Kumho muddies are friggin brilliant..... infact too brilliant on dry tar ( slightly more power robbing than other brands ....in my opinion ) but in the wet ...... WOW.... they are awesome.

From dry dust ..... to cold snow !!!!

Cedric, it's not the tires robbing your power, it's the stuff you put in the fuel tank!

What is the verdict on maxxis bighorns? (Mt-762).I see they make a 255/85r16, which is 33.3" but narrower than 285/75/r16, probably less power robbing than the 285's ? ( prob better fuel consumption?).
