What I think is meant here is that I wanted to get more air into my top mount intercooler, and the round bar that runs across the front of the bumper changes the airflow characteristics, so I had to make the scoop a little higher to "catch" more air.

Any aftermarket bumper must have sufficient air intake openings because your Patrol has a front mount intercooler and will need cool unrestricted air from the front.

The Front bar on my Patrol, as seen in previous pic, is an ONCA unit and fitted as Factory from Nissan when purchasing the SAFARI edition patrol pickup.

It is the same bar that is used with the TD42Ti variant,... and to my knowledge i havnt heard/seen any negative issues being raised with the owners of these models thus far, and its been 7 years since they were released.

The Patrol TD42ti is issued with a top mount intercooler as standard factory assembly, so Air flow to intercooler is via bonnet scoop. ... front mount would be a personal modification which would obviously require certain Air voids in a bumper to aid cooling.

As far as power goes.. this is my opinion.

Cruiser 1HZ motor is superior on paper when compared to the TD42 (Normally Aspirated), however, all my findings when the subject of larger tyres in question is that the Cruiser suffers a greater reduction in power than the TD42 in these instances which i can only then attribute to difference is gearing when compared to one another, as i definitely only had minor power variation between the 235x85x16 and the 285x75 x16 on my patrol.

The part that no one talks about is the slightly heavier steering and the speed scrub that occurs when cornering. Certainly both are less whilst using the 235's. But by no means is it an issue for me, we talking about minor changes one can feel through the driving experience and isnt of any dramatic concern.

The Cruiser 1HZ seems to be more susceptible to negative effects of larger tyres, .. in a nutshell .

The one pitfall of all patrols and can be enough of a curse to drive you insane, ... is wheel wobble at 85-105km/h on certain vehicles,.. and also, death wobble,.. however, both of these need a thread all to themselves as im not going into it now. There is plenty of material online.

Cheers
Russ.

Is it possible to fit 33" on a patrol pickup without suspension lift?

Would the "speed scrub when cornering" be reduced when running a narrower 33" tyre (255/85) ?

'm unsure... probably. However, to run 285 / 33" you should also look at adding wheel spacers to correct the rear axle width to match that of the front, as the pickup, like the cruiser, has a narrower rear axle than the front axle, hub to hub measurement) mine are 43mm spacers. I did run my 285's without them at one time or another, however, the rims i was using then were not my Original patrol pickup rims, they were trail dusters, and although they stated the EXACT same offset as the originals,(16" 0 offest) they were 7j rims , which pushed them out slightly. The 0 offset also seemed different, as they were more like -10 offset to be honest.

Dont stress about the speed scrub etc,... get the 285's and dont look back. 255's are only gonna make the slightest difference in certain areas, but in other areas the 285's will make the slight difference,... and so on.

Like i said,... the 255's are gonna be risky. No one keeps them, almost no one travels with them,.. its not a good call for people who wanna use their vehicles in the toughest conditions with confidence... just give it some thought. my opinion of course.

what is the recommended tyre load rating for a patrol pickup. I can basically buy 6 maxxis bighorns for the price of 5 bfg km2's. Against all advise i am still considering the thinner 255/85r16's. Pity they are not more widely available.

Bighorns: 119/116, 1250-1360kg per tyre.
Km2: 123/120, 1400-1550kg per tyre.

Would the bighorns load index be sufficient for a fully loaded patrol pickup?
Would you get the same mileage out of 6 bighorns than what you would get out of 5 km2's?

If only i could get a better price on the km2's, the price of the bighorns is really tempting...

Dude i don't run other brands down....i know the km2 got 182000 on them ....what are the sidewall specs on the maxxis ??? They are good on wet tar and the berries when it comes to mud and dirt ....stick to 33 a tire has about 7 years live depends on what you use it for but they normally start cracking before they are run finished....the thinner ones are gonna look Odd and your contact with road surface will be less

255/85r16 is also a 33", they are slightly higher than 285/75's. Must admit that I have not seen this size on a patrol pickup in real life, whish i could, i have only seen some pics. Surely they must look better than 235/85's?

Here some pics i found on patrol4x4.com:

Those 255 have 30mm less rubber on the road to me it looks wrong ... when you need the grip on a rocky climb or floatation on sand it will come in handy :mytwocents:

Been down this road, seen all the pics you shown, googled the life out of it. Had Johan Tyres give advice, spoke to possible suppliers etc,.. 285 comes out tops every time.

255 will loog good on the patrol but once you start lifting the patrol etc you gonna want to get a bit more width to offset the roll.

As for Maxxis,.. not saying they bad at all, but i can probably guarantee you that you wont see more than 60k out a set on a patrol... and i heard from G--Tech and ATS and 2 other huge tyre suppliers that Maxxis have terrible after sales service and dont stand by thier product...

I use BFG simple as that. Reliable, Robust, Proven, High Grip, good wall strength, good milage, easy to replace, fair price, best all-rounder tyre IMO,.

Thanks, will keep that in mind. Availability seems to be a problem with 255's. Maxxis load rating on the 255's is very low. It will probably cause the tyres to wear out even quicker.

I know its not in same league as bfg, but has anyone used firestone destination mt before? Seems they are about R500-R700 per tyre cheaper than bfg.. (Then i might have spare change for another set of rims...)
