Project "LASARUS"

Post by JG Shields »

My 2001 model 3.0Di's engine died near Bloemfontein with 275000km on the clock. Die mathematics of an overhall and/or a new 3.0Di engine was aginst me. I considered a conversion to a V8 Lexus petrol engine. I was actually committed to the conversion when Danny advertised a 4.8 & gearbox on this forum. I visited the 4.8 and struck a deal with Danny. A new door opened. The 4.8 engine was still neatly stowed away in the 2007 model 4.8 body that sustained accident damage from the rear - a write-off only due to the high Nissan component prices. The 4.8 had done some 48000km. Danny uses the front part of the body to rebuild his Patrol bakkie that also sustained accident damage. He helped me tremendously by removing the engine, gearbox, fuel tanks, propshafts etc. I removed the harnasses & electrics from the body. 2 - 3 Days later the entire insides of the 4.8 was packed on Danny's trailer ready to be shipped to Bloem by myself where the transplant team stood ready for the arrival of the new organs. The organs includes: COMPLETE ENGINE WITH AIRCLEANER & RADIATOR WITH FANS, GEARBOX, PROPSHAFTS, FUEL TANKS, ELECTRICAL HARNASSES WITH ALL FUSEBOXES, RELAY BOXES, SWITCHES AND COMPUTER, GEARLEVER CONSOL.

The head of the transplant team in Bloem, Attie van Biljon, is an electronic/auto-computer specialist. His business is conversions of almost any vehicle to Lexus V8 engines. (I saw the most beautiful Safari bakkie with Lexus he converted) It was his recommendation of a complete transplant rather than a conversion from 3.0Di to 4.8.

With this whole "engine dying" experience I thought that the time is right to name my Patrol for the first time. A few names crossed my mind. However, on my way to Bloem with all the organs for the transplant, the name LASARUS plugged. I was in fact on my way to Bloem with the vital components which would enable the doctor to revive my Patrol from the dead. On top of that thought I was greatfull to HIM for the opportunity to get my Patrol back to life within such a good option. SO, PROJECT LASARUS COMMENCED THIS WEEK!

Myne is so n ligte grys kleur.

My ander keuse was 'n Chev Lumina enjin OF 'n 4,2 diesel, maar maar maar -
ek sal more weet of Agarob se eie enjin herstelbaar is - en indien nie, sal ek ook die 4,8 roete volg.

As mens oplees vind mens die vlge oorsake,

Ns.

1. My 2001 model Patrol se bakwerk het meer verskille van die 2007 modelle as wat ek verwag het.

2. Die enjin "mounts" skuif omtrent 300mm vorentoe.

b. Ja, my inlaat was effens met olie bevuil. Ek het egter my MAF gereeld met "carb cleaner" skoon gespuit.

Groetnis, ons gesels weer.

UPDATE!

Lasarus prepares to lift his head from the floor. The mechanicals are all done. No major hick-ups. The following were challanging:

1. We decided not to use the 4.8 radiator. The brackets are different and the diesel radiator is bigger. Attie is building a cowling from sheet metal to fit between the 2.
2. The gearbox mounting had to be moved back approx 30mm. This however is the exact place where the 4.8 gearbox is positioned in the 4.8 body. The 4.8 rear propshaft fits as is. The front propshaft had to be made longer with the same 30mm. Diff remain the diesel diffs for the time being.
3. (The cooler fan aquisition from Australia was discussed under the "marketplace" topics)

The electrics seems to be more challenging: (Remember, I transplanted the entire looms systems)

1. The steering wheels with indicator control unit are slightly different and we have to use the 2001 models controls because of steering column limitations. The connectors & wiring to and from the control unit have to be sorted out manually.
2. The diesel had no speedo-cruise. The 4.8's control unit that fits onto the steering wheel have to be transplanted to the diesel steering wheel. Fortunately we have all the little components.
3. We trust (so far) that the airbag systems are the same. If not we might see a pre-mature airbag birth.
4. The radios and climate control systems are not the same and the wiring have to be sorted out manually. Fortunately this only applies to the control units on the dash.

If everything goes well Lasarus will be helped to its feet for a trial walk at the end of this week. Attie informed me that he took some pictures of the work done. Hopefully I will be able to place some on the post soon.
