GPS/RADIO REPLACEMENT

Post by G-MAN »

Hi Guys. Has anyone replaced the Nissan factory cd/radio in a 06 Patrol GRX with one of these GPS/CD/DVD/TV/RADIO/coffee maker yet? :helpsign: Would like to but it's a fair amount to spend and then find out it's k*k.

If you going to want to use the gps function to its full extend I would not do it - from what I have heard and been told is that its very difficult and in some instances impossible to do upgrades on your map software on those units - so what ever map software you buy it with is what your are stuck with!! You also cant load additional map software like Tracks 4 Africa on it - it's not compatible to most of those kind of units.

Rather stick to a gps on it's own - and if you want then just replace your radio with a cd / dvd type unit. They not that expensive - I paid R3500-00 for the unit in my car and it has a fold down / fold away 7" screen. So when you listening to the radio no need to bring out the screen.

I don't know if you saw mine at tierkloof - but that is a cd/dvd/mp3 compatible radio with an sd and usb slot - so you can even view photos from your camera sd card on it (like they did at Tierkloof in my car) or listen to music or watch movies loaded on a usb device.

Hope it helps - my :mytwocents: worth.

I have seen where this is very successfully used with Garmap Mobile XT, Garmap Africa Series and T4A. My brother ran both his Nuvi 760 and one of the Chines import do it alls. The only difference was the the do it all's screen was much better than the Nuvi. Appart from that no complaints. This was on our Kaokoland trip. I suppose if you get it right it is the best solution if you are happy with the Nuvi type GPS's. If you want a proper GPS buy a Garmin 276C.

Pieter, fully aware of that. My point is that if you use a Nuvi or any of the other "softer" GPS's the All in one car radio, dvd player and GPS will do the job just as good if not better for the same price.
You can import one of those jobbies from Hong Kong for R4000 or buy it from http://www.stopshop.co.za for between R3500 and R4500. Either 1din or 2din.

The Garmin 276C however is a beast of a totally different colour. It is dust and splashproof. It has the ability to overlay Garmap Africa series and T4A and cost about double the price of a Nuvi 760. And worst of all is that the biggest memory card Garmin produces is 512MB at the friendly price of 1800 locally.

I will be upgrading from my current Garmin iQue 3600 to one of these do-it-all's in the near future, 1. because it is cheaper than a new GPS, 2. because it has a 7inch screen which no Garmin or TomTom product can match.

It is a risk because Garmap Mobile XT is not a perfect fit and need a few hacks (all which is available online if you know where to look). However what I have seen make it worth my while. Plus at R3500 for the one I am looking at, it still is worth my while to have rear camera mounted, extra dvd screens for the kids and a nice system even if the GPS proves not to be all its made out to be.
