Biggles, I'm assuming you have the same Patrol as I have. The GU 4.2 Diesels only came out for 2 years (1998-1999). thereafter they changes to the 3.0 engine. The 4.2 diesels also only came out here in SA as the GL model, which had absolutely zero luxuries....  ... There was never a roof console fitted or sub tank or sunroof or climate control or leather seats. However the leather seats was an optional extra.

The roof console can be retrofitted. Christo who is quite an electrical boffin in my opinion did a roof console installation in his Patrol ( exactly same as mine) and with a detailed wiring diagram to get everything working. However its not a simple quick job, and a lot of cutting and behind the dashboard and instrument cluster work needs to be done. But having said that, I managed to do it, and I'm no electrical fundi.

The buttons to the left of the radio.... If you still have the original electric aerial, then the top left button adjusts the aerial to either be fully extended, or can be set at a halfway mark. Chances are that yours has already been replaced with something else, and you will never need that button again. My suggestion... just fit a blank plug in the space.
Regards
Cedric

I agree Ricster, I had a look at doing a retro fit on the roof consol on my 4.5 Graham thought that the same wireing harness was used on the GL and GRX, NOPE! I would have to pull power from the rear lights and would have to buy and fit the sensors for the temp gauge and compass so decided just to leave it as it was, bought a temp gauge from Midas and have a compass in the draw system! :mytwocents:

The wiring was pretty easy, as long as I followed Christo's manual. The soldering onto the back of the instrument cluster was a little stressful for the compass pulse, but the worst was taking a knife to the roof lining..... measure 20 times and cut once.... no room for error. The thermistor with resistors to get the accurate temperature( again thanks to Christo ) was easily soldered together and connected in front of the radiator as is on the standard installation. It was one of the best mods I've done. I have my bluetooth mic fitted in there too with the map reading lights ( fitted with LED globes makes easy work looking into the dark cubbyhole at night.

If someone wants the roof console installation guide, give me a shout.

Just for the record, Biggles' Patrol started life as a 3.0 GRX, but was converted to 4.2 TD (by then owner Pieter du Toit) when the original motor expired, so he would have the GRX refinements as standard equipment.

Signature updated to avoid similar confusion later :eureka:

OK, indeed my aerial doesn't budge, so i will have to look into that. Plugs would be nice. Looking at holes in the dash really annoys me.

I have a set of rear jump seats (grey cloth) that I'm not using. A case of Tafel Lagers and they're yours!

PS: Maybe I should publish my roof console retrofit guide on the forum?
