Fuel Pump Replacement

Hi All

I am suspecting that the fuel pump on my 98 4.5 is busy acting up so I was hoping you guys could help me with 2 questions

1. Is there an affordable aftermarket pump that can be bought from a local Midas or the likes? If so any recommendations and ballpark price tags?
2. Is this a DIY job and is any other adjustments that needs to be done once the replacement part has been fitted?

HERRIE op Safari [Oom Kobus] had somne issues with his Patrol's pump .. AND he found a solution .. Wait for his reply :idea:

Hi Jacques

Hier is n post oor wat ek gedoen het en waar ek n pomp gekry het. Daar is ander manne wat ook hulle ervaring hier ge-post het. Daar is meer onlangs deur IanT n post geplaas.

Die vervanging van die petrol pomp op die 4.5 maak n groot verskil. Dit is blykbaar n fabrieks ding met die 4.5 Patrol en Cruiser. Die pomp moet 3.5Bar kan lewer. Midas verkoop n Bosch produk waar van ek weet. Ek het n pomp in Bloem gekry wat soos n handskoen pas in die plek van die pomp wat ek uit gehaal het. Dit was R450 as ek reg onthou.

Ek het dit self gedoen. Ek weet van die ander manne het dit by n ou in Pretoria laat doen (Graham 012 6513447 083 417 7503). Ek het sommer my tenk uitgehaal en skoon gemaak ook. Ek was verbaas oor hoe vuil n tenk kan raak binne. As jy dit self wil doen kan ek vir jou die stappe post. Dit is redelik eenvoudig.

Ruil die pomp, jy sal nie verkeerd gaan nie.

Hi Marino4x4

Ek het na so bietjie krap van die posts opgespoor en ek sien daar was verwys na die SD43070 pomp. Ek kan een by my Autozone optel vir so R400. As jy so paar pointers my kant toe kan stuur sal ek dit baie waardeer. Daar is glo toegang tot die pomp van bo af? Ek neem aan ek sal die mat moet lig daarvoor?

Ok. Lyk my Autozone het nie die SD filter gehad nie maar dit gecrossreferance na n FEMO FPE080. Het iemand al hiermee gewerk?

Hi Jacques

Ek hoop ek onthou alles:

1. As jy die agterste deure oopmaak is daar n plastiek strip op die vloer van die laairuim. Maak dit los. Dit is plastiek buitjies/skroefies. Dit kan dalk n bietjie van n sukkel wees. Plastiek en skroefdraad is nie maatjies nie. Ek dink daar is 6-8 van hulle.
2. Maak die cargo holds los wat op die vloer vasmaak. Dit is n staalskroef wat met n nr10 spanner of n redelike Phillips (Ster skroewedraaier) losgemaak kan word.
3. Die vloer behoort nou opgelig kan word.
4. Maak jou petrol prop oop op al twéé die petroltenks. Anders druk die druk in die tenk al jou petrol uit en dit le op die vloer.
5. As doe mat op is, sal jy n vierkantige plaatjie aan die regterkant sien op die vloer. Die is met 4 skroewe vas. Maak hulle los en verwyder die plaat.
6. Jy sal nou pypies sien wat bo op die petrol tenk ingaan en 8 boutjies sien wat jy kan losdraai om die petrol pomp en fuel level sensor unit te verwyder.
7. Maak die pypies los. Maak net seker jy weet watter een is watter een. Een neem die petrol na die enjin, die ander een is die een wat die petrol van die enjin af bring. Maak ook die elektriese konneksie los bo op die pomp.
8. As die pypies los is, kan jy die pomp/sensor unit verwyder. (Jy sal hom dalk bietjie moet maneuver om dit uit die tenk te kry)
9. Daar is n raampie oor die pomp. Verwyder die filter onder aan die pomp. Maak die plastiek raampie oor die pomp los. Jy sal dan die skroewe wat die elektriese drade vashou kan verwyder.
10. Ek moes die gaatjie bietjie groter boor aan die eenkant van die elektriese drade. Die ou pomp het met skroewe vasgemaak, die SD pomp maak met boutjies van verskillende grote vas.
11. Ek het sommer partly steel gevat om die konneksies te seel. Dit is petrol vas en gee mens net sekerheid.
12. Doen nou al die stappe agteruit om dit weer aan mekaar te sit.

Dit klink dalk soos groot werk, maar dit is so 30 min se werk.

My pomp wat ek gekry het ly identies soos die wat op die prente is wat jule verskaf het. Ek het nou my pomp uitgekry maar dit is aansienlik kleiner fisies as die wat ek gekry het en die krag koppeling is met n plug nie sulke aparte pole nie??????

Nou wat gemaak? Customise ek nou maar die storie om te pas? Lengte is dieslfe alhoewel ek sal nie die plastiek raampie kan gebruik nie. Ek sal ook die krag proppie moet knip om aparte konneksies op te sit.

Tip:

Before replacing the fuel pump, replace the fuel filter first. I did it the other way round just to find the filter was the biggest culprit...

The "VW" 4 bar replacement I used didn't have plugs, but did have another type of connection - ie lugs were not threaded like the orginal, and I had to add some nuts to fix the wires.

Prior to this I have replaced the Fuel filter. Cleaned the Airflow sensor and had it on the dyno which improved the situation a bit just to return again not too long after.

I decided to go ahead with snipping cables and the rest last night as the pump I found was an aftermarket (Walbro GSS250) already along with the power connectors that was soldered on. I got it installed back into the car and so far results are looking promising although I have not taken her for a proper drive to get a real idea. Some before and after pics.

Thanks to everyones input. This forum absolutely rocks. I have saved many moola in terms of suggestions on how to repair something or finding alternative replacement parts thanks to you guys.

If the top pic is the "before" and the bottom pic the "after", that pump was replaced previously. Top pick shows "screw" hose clamps not used by the manufacturers as OME. Maybe the pump pressure is thus not sufficient for the big motor?
