Patrol taillights

This big dummy taillights on my Patrol was bothering me alot!

Why didn't they wire them up with the bottom bumper lights???

So, after stopping at my local Midas for some globeholders and bulbs...

Went back home, plug in the soldering iron... and a hour or so later...

Voila!!!

This big dummy has only just spotted the dummy lights. What's the story behind them i.e. why? - can't simply be for the look - that's not why you buy a Patrol.

Lunar, would like to know exactly how you connected them, thanx - remember I'm not a sparky like you

I would love to wire mine up too, but there's such a thick layer of rubberising on the screws that I can't take the lens covers out at all. That's bound to become a major issue when I have to replace a blown bulb in there

In some countries there are regulations that specify more strict visibility angles for the tail lights than others.
The off-centre spare wheel obscures the tail lights on one side when viewed at a specified angle.
In other countries this "dummy lights'' are fully functional, and then there are no lights in the bumper.

It is really easy to do-it-yourself.

Get some globe holders from Midas. (The ones that pushes in, not the twist-in type.)
Take out the lights.
Drill the holes with a whole saw.
Press in the globes and holders.
I have put some silicone around the holders to prevent dust and water to enter.
Connect the wires to the existing wiring on the un-used white plug.
Job done!

Hello Albert en almal.

Like you said. The moment a light is obscured by a tyre etc it becomes illegal to have those lights. Therefore they mostly activate the bottom lights. A bit dof to me cos they are the first to fill with water etc!

Yes, and if one tows a trailer, that bumper lights are invisible, where the side lamps may be seen from the sides of the trailer.
