Drawer system question

Post by izakjbrt »

Hi guys

I am thinking of getting myself a drawer system for my patrol. So I am asking the guys that have experience with them, or had them installed what they would suggest.

I am currently looking at 3:

1) The Front-runner 4cub box drawer & fridge slide (I can get one second hand that has only been used once for R10000)
2) The Front-runner Y61 drawer kit, at about R12000 just for the drawer kit and an extra R2-3k for the slide (I have a NL 90L, so I need to make sure it fits on top)
3) The Big Country Savuti for the patrol. This one is the most expensive, its close to R18K for the drawers and slide, so its way bottom on the "want" list. But it looks the best of all

What I like about the patrol specific drawer systems, they look like they are actually part of the patrol, but they are expensive and I need to make sure the fridge will fit on top of it (I have a portable NL battery pack that also needs to fit. The 4cub has the slide an everything, but its universal, so I'll have to see if the battery pack will fit next to, or will it need to go on top (then I need to tie it down to prevent from shooting forward in case of an accident.)

So to all the guys in the know, what do you suggest?

As Tinus mentions, a big issue wit a drawer system that has the fridge on top is not so much whether the the fridge fits in the car, but whether you can reach inside the fridge...

For that reason, I built mine to have the fridge next to the drawers.
Mag ons ons kenniskry met lekkerkry aanhoukry.

I also have a big fridge. I built my drawers to take the fridge and have a drawer for packing boxes and another for recover kit and spares. I had 100mm left in front of the boxes slide so I made a quirky little tray with a drawer for my coffee stuff. The lower fridge position works well for me and my short wife.

Sorry, the pics were taken at night.

I did another custom drawer system for a plumber who wanted drawers on one side of his Isuzu bakkies. I used the longest (and strongest) available slides from furnlock. I got 8 ammo boxes into each unit with a bin at the back for larger parts.

The parts and tools to be carried were heavy, hence the huge slides. they had to be able to carry the weight at full extension. When he came to collect I told him to open the drawer fully and load his kids in the end of the slide. I covered them in Belgotex fungus and mildew resistant carpet in a colour that best matched their logo.

As Tinus said, I will be doing a custom system for Alex in "skilpad" I'll take pics once I start the build. Should be in a weeks time that I start.

Wow Anthony, I always love seeing your work.

I also built my own drawers. Its not finished yet. I first wanted to do a few camps so that if I wanted to change anything I could do so easily. Will probably take them out again next year to do all the finishing toutches.

Personally I really really hate ammo boxes/Wolf packs, mostley because you always need the bottom one if they are stacked, overloading them and that their clips open sideways so. I do like the frontrunner Cub packs more if I had to choose. Their clips sit on the lid and they are a bit smaller.

I don’t recomend the locks I used. They don't handle the weight of such big drawers very well. I will probably be installing ones that Anthony used soon.
I have replaced my ammo boxes with another drawer in the mean time.

I would recommend for you also just to but three stacked drawers on one side of the vehicle next to the fridge. One deep one at the bottom an the two smaller ones on top.
