Graham it works perfect that way as long as you dont change direction a lot its a friction lock so it unlocks and locks again when you change direction . On rocky trails i lock it on sand i let it do it by itself

Re: What is this doo-hickey?
Peter Conan makes a neat little tool that you can keep in the front door pocket for locking and unlocking so have a talk to him.
I see you live in PTA, we have a very big group of guys from there so maybe see if you can get to one of them to take you through the vehicle.
Keep an eye on the events tab for our next outing, the best way to learn is to join us and we will take you through the track and show you what a monster you have to play with

Re: What is this doo-hickey?
You can use a wheel spanner.

Re: What is this doo-hickey?
Graham, a lot of 4x4s don't even have a manual lock options. It is auto and that's it. My Hardbody has auto hubs and I've been using it like that for 10 years without incident. It has started to make some funny noises, i.e., it doesn't seem to engage or disengage as easily as it used to, but probably just needs a service with clean grease.
When I serviced my hubs on the Patrol a few weeks ago I removed the auto locker so it is now free when set to auto. I'll lock it manually before heading off to a trail.

Re: What is this doo-hickey?
I only lock my front hubs if I remember when on a trail. The auto hubs are pretty damn strong in my opinion, but like others have said, they unlock as soon as you stop and go backwards and then re-lock again, then unlock and re-lock as soon as you go forwards causing lots of unnecessary wear. By locking the hubs before starting a trail you can just go nuts without fear.
Its just nice to be able to shift into 4x4 without having to stop and get out to manually lock the hubs.

Re: What is this doo-hickey?
As Tinus said. The hubs keep on engaging and disengaging in auto mode everytime you stop and/or reverse. Eventually they wear out and your stuck with a repair bill. That's what happened to my Patrol with it's previous owner. It's now sporting a set of AVM manual hubs.

Re: What is this doo-hickey?
Well I’ve definitelt learnt something today. Thanks all.
I guess I’ve never had an issue cos let’s be honest, in a patrol you never have to reverse on an obstacle to try again. It’s always first shot through.

David ................waar is jy ?

Come visit me, then I will show you a few things.izakjbrt wrote: ↑22 Apr 2018 15:12 I know this question is probably proof beyond a doubt that I am an idiot. But I am not nearly the 4x4 expert no one believes I am. I noticed that when I took the "trollie" for a wheel alignment and balancing that the lovely little wheel caps on with the Nissan badge on the front wheels were missing. Hissing under my breath at the dealer trying to screw me over again, I went to inspect some further.
And low and behold, I saw that there is word written on it: "Lock"" and "Auto". Now I know the patrol has a rear diff lock (it does have a rear diff lock right?)? And has a nice button on the dash to proof it. But yes, what is it that is on the front axle of my patrol? And what is the function (see attachment)
