Trouble shifting from 4Hi to 2Hi
I sometimes have trouble getting out of 4WD to 2WD with my 2005 Patrol 4.8 GL (P63).
The 4x4 light remains on, and I can feel all 4 wheels engaged, even though the gear is in the 2Hi position.
I have tried reversing (about 40 meters), drove about a kilometer to the shop, but still nothing.
The previous time this happened 4x4 disengaged on its own (and the 4x4 light went off) after driving a few kilometers at low speed (<80km/h).
Have any of you guys had this issue too?
And any advice on what I can do or am doing wrong?

Re: Trouble shifting from 4Hi to 2Hi
Over time I had various of my 4x4's doing that. I find on my Patrol if I manual lock the hubs it goes out of 4H immediately. BUT with the hubs on Auto I have the same problem. One of the causes I found was if the front wheels are not dead straight and also if the vehicle is not level. But with the hubs on lock it has never happened to me [yet]

Re: Trouble shifting from 4Hi to 2Hi
Dirk, is yours is the auto 4.8?
I have also had mine stay in 4x4 for a good few meters at times. I thought it was just due to the diff "wind-up", but always disengages back to 2x4 after I either wiggle the stering left and right for a few meters while going forward and/or backwards.
It's weird that yours stays on for so long though. Thats not normal. I'm sure others with 4.8 autos will have better advice than me though

Mine also disengages pretty quickly. Usually I drive in an "S" pattern to disengage quicker

Re: Trouble shifting from 4Hi to 2Hi
I need to check the drivers manual ( will light stay one when..) but my common sense tells me that if the Patrol 4wd light should be switched purely by the position of the gear selection lever - similar to a reverse light, the 4wd / 2wd is nothing more than a shift between 2 gears in a manual gearbox say 2-3. This is as mechanical/hard shifting gears with muscle power as it comes, there is no electronics, solenoids , valves or hydraulic actuators involved that might be trying to get back into 2wd . it's on or off .
The only reason it can stay on
shifting mechanism feels like it is in 2wd but actually still in 4wd
sticky switch?
When shifting from 4Hi to 2Hi on the move will generally keep the front diff turning until the auto hubs disengage - normally by moving in a different direction from the locking action (i.e. reverse )
