4.8 MAF sensor
Goeie middag
Ek het die naweek my 4.8 Patrol se lugfilter skoongemaak en toe kyk ek ook na die MAF sensor.
Ek sien daar is 2 punte met niks tussen dit nie.
Moet dit so wees of is daar iets weg?

Nee hulle lyk so het n nuwe een ingesit wat ek by Graham gekry het maak n groot verskil van 3000 af tot druk hy jou vas ...en daar is n komponent tussen die draadjies

Met ons kamp uitstappie net voor kersfees het my brandstof verbruik eweskielik belaglik geword, meer belaglik as gewoonlik . Loer toe ook vining na die MAF sensor en myne lyk ook soos die een in die foto hierbo. Die foto's wat ek ge-google het het almal iets wat lyk soos 'n resistor daar tussen daardie twee punte. So ek is ook bietjie confused
Is dit maar net verskillende modelle?

Ek het ook n nuwer een deur Tinus by Graham gekoop. Die sonder resistor lyk my is n ouer weergawe. Die nuwer een met die resistor maak die kar bietjie meer responsive. En soos Tinus se.
Reel n nuwer een by Graham en hou die oue mooi erens vir n backup.

So whilst Graham was on holiday and I refused to even ask Nissan for a price, I went hunting for a MAF sensor. I contacted these guys: www.airflowmeters4cars.co.za. They are in Cape Town and seem to only do deliveries, no walk in shop. They worked from my VIN and quoted me R1450, which I thought was reasonable. Was a bit skeptical when I received it via courier and it was in an unmarked box in some bubble wrap with no markings or numbers whatsoever. Yesterdays date also seems to be engraved on it . Anyway, I stuck it in and it works perfectly so far. Will have to do a proper test of fuel economy to see if there is any improvement.
They asked for pin setup on the plug - this is the original Nissan one (Courtesy of Tinus ):
The old one I took out looks exactly like the ones in the first post, but the new one looks slightly different (apart from the little wire) Photo from the internet also showing the Nissan Part number I decided to also replace the O2 sensors. Josh was kind enough to send me part numbers for a Bosch unit that he had previously gotten. Unfortunately no-one that I contacted could get that specific part, only Hella stuff that looked nowhere even close to the original. Luckily I stumbled onto an ausie Bosch site https://au.bosch-automotive-shop.com which showed that this specific sensor is a suitable replacement for the 4.8
The part number is 0258986507 and thankfully I could get them from Cape Town @ R925 each. From what I can see they look exactly like the OEM ones apart from the 3 wire vs 4 wire, for which there is a workaround on the forum somewhere
Will try and get them in asap and report on any significant results

I’ve managed to swop the O2 sensors with the new ones. Not too difficult a task and language used was only PG, not R-rated.
My biggest fear was that the heatshield would have to come out but I was hoping that one could just loosen and pull them away. Luckily this is the case, especially because the shield is split into two parts. Everything came apart really easy expect one bolt that holds the heatshield that just snapped off inside the manifold at the first attempt to loosen it. Theres got to be one right
The old and new sensors: For some reason the front and rear Nissan sensors have different part numbers from each other. I cannot imagine why? In my mind the gas composition of the front 3 cylinders would and should be the same as the back 3? Anyway here’s the two old sensors, I cannot see any external difference: One then cuts the plug from the old sensor and connect it to the new one. There is a kit included and instructions. So the extra grey wire on the new sensors are apparently external earths and I joined the together and connected to the body. From what I can gather the two white wires are for the heating element, which ensures that the sensors work correctly before the engine reaches temperature. Out of curiousity I tested and compared old and new sensors. On the new ones I could get a reading between the two whites, but not the old. Which may or may not explain the heavy smell of fuel I got when starting cold.
After connecting the wires popped the sensors back in, plugged them in and connected the external earths:
Started up and engine runs perfectly smooth (not that it didn’t before). So next step is fill up and see if there my consumption returns to normal. Well, normal for a 4.8 anyway
