My Survey - Your Suspension Kit

Post by georgeb »

Goeie middag almal

Laat weet gerus watter tipe suspensie (ook die steering damper) jy op jou Patrol(s) het - indien jy 'n ekstra minuut het, deel sommer jou gebruikservaring. Indien jy "Other" kies, plaas sommer ook die besonderhede.

Good afternoon Folks

Share details of your current suspension kit (also the steering damper) and if you have a minute to spare - throw in your experience as well. If you choose "Other", please give details.
Groete/Regards,

George Brittnell

I have always take all my vehicles to General Spring Works in Driehoek Germiston for lifts and suspension work. I have found them extremely knowledgeable and way, way, way cheaper than all the "name" brands.

You take your car in in the morning and it is ready that same afternoon. If you are not happy with the mod or the result, they will redo the whole job free of charge.

I first took my Terrano there as I found with the about 200kg nose weight of the Desert Wolf trailer, the Terrano was riding on the bumpstops. They put in coils with a wire thickness of 1mm thicker than standard rear coils and raised front (turned up the torsion bars only) and back by 50mm. After 3 months I took it back after my first trip with the Terrano and trailer and they fitted coils with 2mm thicker wire. Still I was not happy and about a year later I took it back and they put in 3mm thicker wire rear coils. That worked! All free of charge under their "If you're not happy, bring it back" policy.

Then I took my Safari (aka Poeliesvhen) and they leveled the leaf springs out as the vehicle was leaning left and backward. It came back perfectly level and raised by about 75mm (longer hangers)

Then it was my 4.2 Patrol's turn. 2mm thicker wire coils and 50mm lift. - result perfectly happy me!!

I took my current Patrol (Y61) there just more than a year ago and they raised the suspension by 60mm front /65mm rear and also 2mm thicker wire coils. The cost was about R3500 IIRC and although the wife said initially that she finds it difficult to get into the vehicle (height), she soon forgot that gripe and I am very happy with the result.

I have not changed the steering damper on any of my Patrols or on the Safari, but initially the Y61 had that dreaded death wobble under braking when I got it. After changing the 265/70 x 16 wheels and steel rims for 265/70 x 17 alloy wheels (both are 9" wide and a +23 offset), that wobble disappeared by itself

Up to now, my car has had OME shocks on. The rear ones seem to be for the Patrol, but the front are not the standard OME shocks for the Patrol and i have been unable to figure out what they are.

The springs are also of indeterminate heritage. The rears are varying-rate, and to my mind mine is the most comfortable Patrol i have driven on very bad roads, and also has more flex than just about everybody else on the forum. Steering damper is OME.

A couple of years ago i built and fitted an X-link.
But all the shocks are very tired now. As of this morning, i ordered a set of Terrain Tamer rear shocks and a steering damper from Marinus.
On the 7th of July last year i ordered a pair of custom Bilstein shocks from Mikem.
I think the Terrain Tamers will be here before the Bilsteins, but I have been promised that the Bilsteins will be ready this week.

Slrings will have to remain for now, even though they are sagging noticeably now...

Nothing, just the coils. They said nothing else was needed. They also did my 1995 4.2i GLX. Same lift, although that one had 33's on 10 x 15 rims

Currently have OME and they are excellent but pricey.....

If I was buying now it would be Spring Centre in Germiston for custom coils and Mikem for custom Bilstein shocks..... I prefer buying South African if I can get the right quality....

For the bakkie definitely Spring Centre for parabolic leaf springs.....
