Loss of fuel pressure on very steep uphill
Vehicle is '98 4.2 diesel NA
So I was at Moegatle on the weekend and the vehicle slowly stalled on two separate obstacles while I was attempting to crawl up.
I have done both of those obstacles before without this issue.
I did an oil change service (265k) on Wednesday before the weekend and also replaced the fuel filter.
Something weird happened though....
After putting the new filter in, I couldnt get the thing primed with the manual pump on the filter. I Even filled the new filter with diesel to help it along. Eventually I got it right. This is the 4th time I'm replacing the filter so I have done it before... with ease.
I thought there may be a crack in one of the rubber fuel hoses running up to the filter and down to the pump, so I bought some new hose and fitted it on Friday.
The tank was just over half full while I was on these obstacles.
so... what's wrong?
1. perhaps the manual pump membrane is leaking
2. perhaps there is a perished hose between the tank and the fuel line
3. perhaps the Diesel pump is vrot (I don't think so, it goes fine on the road, no problems...
4. perhaps the diesel pump is just not up to the task(I don't think so, I have done those obstacles in the same vehicle with no issues)
Ideas?...

Also had a problem with the champion filter not sealing on my previous service and just put the old one back.
Its not possibly an air restriction problem? That it doesn’t get enough at low rpm but at high rpm forces enough through.

Those campion filters are defective .... the top of the steel bottoms out on the housing before the rubber can seat ....

Jip, 100% as mentioned by Tinus and Tijmen.
Thise champion filters are garbage, they actually now stock the full range of GUD filters for the Patrols for me at our local spares shop because of these sub standard other brands.
Will post a pic of the problem

Re: Loss of fuel pressure on very steep uphill
I bought and fitted a GUD yesterday, problem fixed. GUD is larger, heavier and better made. I won't use champion again.

Re: Loss of fuel pressure on very steep uphill
Pretty sure it's a bad seal on the filter.
For interest sake, I had a similar issue with a GUD filter once. Just a bad batch I guess.
Swop it out for another one and see if that helps.

Here is a pic with the two filters side by side.
Look carefully at the centre section where it screws on
