Post by Gihan »

Naand.

Groete.

I would definitively look into letting Graham sort it out for you, or alternatively, and this was what I did on my Patrol, check the KingPin Bearings. You can check it with a pull gauge to see how many Nm it takes to turn the front wheel left and right. Unfortunately I dont have one of those, so I just took the shim out on the top and bottom king pin bearings. This took maybe 10 mins per side. There are youtube videos that explain it perfectly. I followed the video and took mine for a drive afterwards and it was like driving a completely different car.

It would be best to replace the bearings and refit the shims, I still need to do this ( been too lazy actually to go get them and replace ....  ) and that was many years back. I use my patrol every day as a daily driver too.

Another thing is the play on the steering wheel. I had a lot of play. I had it adjusted properly so that It still returns to straight after cornering and my Patrol rides 1000 times better.

Michael, have you tried to raise the back of the patrol up a little. Before I did the shim removal on mine I pumped the air lifters (bags) that I fitted to just the rear suspension which raised the back end of the patrol up a little. There was a definitive difference in the wobble I had. I assume it changes the geometry of the caster slightly and on mine was probably just enough to get it to as close to the sweet spot as I possibly could with just the air helpers.

I may be completely wrong with this, but when all other options are not working, then lets think outside the box. It could be that the rear coils are a soft ride and have possibly sagged a bit in comparison to the front. With the 2" lift, its almost on the cuff of needing castor correction bush, or if you already have the castor correction bush in, then maybe its then too much correction. I think with the standard bush on a 2 inch lift with a bit of a sag at the rear replicates something close to a 3" lift on the front suspension. By raising the rear the angle changes ever so slightly bringing it back to a 2" lift ( castor angle ).

As a test I would temporarily raise the rear by an inch with a spacer or something, and do a test run. If it works let me know.... if it doesn't ....let me know....

What I can say is that it worked for my Patrol as I have and had a lot of stuff in the back.

Perhaps the steering box is buggered. Means the Pitman Arm will be loose.
Just a suggestion
Maybe the free play in the box must be adjusted
Again just a suggestion

Yeah I mentioned that too on my earlier post. Also makes a big difference, but doesn't 100% resolve the problem, more just solved the action of the wobble and not the wobble itself.

I used to hate getting to about 80Km/h odd and then hold the steering with white knuckles waiting for the wobble, then it calmed down at about 115Km/h, but came back just after 120km/h..... now its a sweet smooth ride in the Iron Maiden
