Over heating problems

Post by savutizn » 04 Oct 2017 07:54

Good morning all,

Help needed for Savuti !!. We have just returned from a Bots- Namibia trip and had the following problems with one still persisting and cannot solve it.
Trip started with a cracked radiator at Harrismith, Patrol did not overheat. Fitted new radiator from Graham, the Delta dealership worked until 1230 AM,
amazing people. Radiator bled, temperature gauge was normal even through the soft sands. On the trip back from Francistown to JHB started to overheat,
gauge on the 3/4 mark, never went into the red . Left it with Graham in PTA to check replaced the viscous fan. On the trip from PTA to the farm ( Nottingham road)
about 40kms from home started to overheat 3/4 again.Next morning it took 1L water.
I then took it to Silverton Radiators who did a pressure and chemical test , all good. However the radiator cap was only registing .8bar instead of 1,2bar fitted new cap.
The waterpump was replaced 15000kms ago
Went to DBN yesterday all well except this morning when I checked the water levels, the expansion tank was full and the radiator needed water.
WHAT COULD BE THE PROBLEM

Tricky one this is.... But I would guess there is an airlock in the system. Possibly in the heating lines. A small airlock can cause loads of sheet, blanket and pillow case. I would try run the motor for a while with the heater on hot to allow the water to cycle completely and then top up the radiator and expansion bottle. Hopefully that sorts out the problem.

not sure if it will help, but park on a steep incline to get the air bubble to move to the front of the car to aid the bleeding process.
Regards
Cedric

If the heater matrix is not open (ie: set to max temp) when the coolant is replaced and bled, you could easily sit with an airlock. I'd suggest following Cedric(aka ricster)'s advice.

Remember that the system needs to be bled via the nipple on the firewall.

Yes - you mentioned that the system was bled. I was merely mentioning that the system should be bled with the heater set to max temp in order to ensure that the pipes through the heater matrix are also bled. This must also be done as the motor reaches temperature (ie: once the thermostat has opened etc). If not, there may still be air in the system, and this ties up with Cedric's post.

In my experience (not with the Patrol - only Graham touches that - but with previous vehicles), some places do not always seem to know this.

I have found on my Patrol that even the smallest leak between the overflow/expansion tank or anywhere ellse on the water pipes will cause air to be drawn in instead of the water in the expansion tank.

The diesel bleads very easy compared to the 4.8 or 4.5, but the fact that you need to fill up the radiator in the morning indicates that there is still air in the system or it is loosing water somewhere.
