What do you mean with having fun Grant?
If you wanted real fun you should have been there.

As regards Michael, he did not have turbo pistons in his machine.
Simple as that. Even Dirk's Patrol would not have lasted as long as this on normal aspirated diesel pistons.

Alex,

Drik's patrol does not have " turbo pistons" in it. I was a stock naturally aspirated 4.2 from Aus back in 97 and had a Safari Turbo and Inter cooler fitted. This did not involve changing pistons. The reason for the reliability is a good and conservative set up. Having 100 kW on the wheels is more than enough. STD it barely made 65 kW on the wheels.

As a tradesman and a engine junkkie I understand the need for more, but with these old diesel, everything has been doen to make then better. You yourself are registered on the Aussie forum. Search Diesel tuning on 4.2 and you will be warned not to boost or fuel to much. Dirk's Patrol was service meticulously over its life and was never set for performance. We did a tune were I was doing around 140 kW on the wheels but it was almost impossible to control the EGT's . If you want performance rather do the petrol route and you can play to your harts content. For diesels risk is higher so you need to decide if you have the finances available.

I now have two Ford rangers 3.2 diesel and they are a dream to drive. Will never do what my old patrol did but for now MTB is my passion and enjoying it. All i have done on one of the rangers is change the exhaust and fit a larger inter cooler. It runs very well and does around 140 kw on the wheels.

The reason for the post was to have sum fun and to dish out some of what I received in the early days of the forum. Those were the days were Tinus insisted you could not run an after market turbo successfully on a 4.2 diesel. How times have changed. Maybe it was due to the sticker I had made that claimed diesel smoke makes woman horny. :rolling: :rolling: :rolling: :rolling: :rolling: :rolling: :rolling:

When is the next GTG planned. Also just fished our third Transbaviaans on single speeds. Great fun

You obviously are very misinformed and have a lack of knowledge on what is possable and what not on a TD42. The ausies make 200kw+ and 700Nm+ without compromising reliability.
My piston failure has nothing to do with how the car was tuned but because I was supplied with the wrong parts and thats it.

If you think a dyno tune will make your engine last longer you are also very far off. Its just a measuring tool to measure power......thats it.

I dont apreciate your making fun of the matter, I am going to spent 20k+ in fixing a problem that should never have been there if I was supplied the right parts so nothing funny about it.

PS: think you will get more complements on your bike pics on thebubsa than here.....but congrats on your single speed event

Hi Guys

Unfortunately I was unable to attend the river trip  but these awesome pics and posts won't stop haunting me WWW
So I'm trying to plan a weekend up threre sometime asap.
So I need a bit of advice please,

1) Can one still drive in the river bed in October / when does it become undrivable / unsafe?
2) If you to had to choose which would you say is a better experience, the Molotots or Klein Letaba? / Why?
3) Would like to camp 2 nights in the river, Can anyone provide me with average traveling distance p.d and GPS coordinates of a good camp area

Thanx

You could probably drive it in October but the way our weather is so weird these years, I wouldn't guarantee it. Certainly camp on the high spots.

Molototsi is better for me, more rocky obstacles on the trip.

You can cover about 40-60kms a day depending on your driving pace. as far as camping spots are concerned, use GPS to find spots as far away from local villages as possible. There are plenty of spots. There's also plenty wood except in the Letaba near the Kruger fence.
