Modern engin oil

Post by Iaan du Toit »

I would like to share an interesting observation made recently.

We run a small fleet of 4x4 vehicles that work daily in extreme conditions.

I have been involved with this business since 2009. When I arrived here maintenance was done on a crisis management basis. Over the years I have turned it around to preventative maintenance.

Recently we had to overhaul a Ford 2.5TD engine, 600 000 km on the clock due to a bent conrod. Water got into the air intake via a damaged inter-cooler pipe. What amazed me was the minimal wear in the sleeves of this engine. Since 2009 this engine ran on Midas diesel oil. Oil and filter changes every 5000 km. Over the last couple of months I have thought this over and my conclusion is that modern day oils are very good.

Our better vehicles we run on Delo, the older ones on the Midas brand. I can also mention here that we have an 2.7 Hilux, 3RZ engine that has done 795 000 km on the Midas brand, engine never opened.

I do not want to get involved in any arguments, just want to share an interesting observation.

Interressant.
Wat is die prys verskil tussen die Midas olie en Delo 400?

Ek gebruik Delo 400 in my td42 en Helix HX7 in die 4.5.

I think it is a combination of materials engineering on the one hand (improved materials and metals in the engine) and huge advances in lubrication technology on the other.

I am also interested in the price difference between Midas brand and Delo for instance. I have noticed that running the Delo 400 in my Toyota 2H engine makes it very happy, for a 37 year old diesel it doesn't smoke at all. I need to service the 4.8 and my Citi Golf this weekend so I will try get some pricing from Midas

Rhett, I picked up a 20L drum of Caltex Delo 400 MGX from Midas for R1080.
Turns out Midas was cheaper on the 20L than the Caltex depot shop.

Midas oil is made by Chevron Caltex.

I just bought 50L of Havoline 10W30 and they placed the 5l bottles in an empty Midas oil box which had Chevron/Caltex refinery production specification stickers on it for Midas liquid gold oil.

So I woke up with some flu this morning, no car servicing for me.
Fanus, did you manage to get any pricing? I also want to compare Motul's range of oils and pricing. Maybe tomorrow if I feel up to it
