Sojo Automotive....... the TD42 one stop shop

Post by Michael »

Gents

Ok so the time has finally arrived where I can make this official.

For a while now I have been doing some mods on the TD42 engines to get them away from the “donkey status” and after MANY tests, trials and using different settings on anything power related on these engines I finally have a recipe that is working great.

So with the permission of Ian du Toit, I could use his TD42 pickup to see what exactly we are gaining on these modifications.
I did n dyno run on his pickup stock standard without ever being fiddled with, I then installed the famous Viper 3” exhaust and did another dyno run to see what the gains are.

In a nutshell, we gained the following results at the rear wheels. Please note that the dyno runs were done at SAC Centurion and there are not calculated figures here……its raw power on the wheels.

Standard power: 70Kw @ 3,500rpm & 236Nm @ 2,000rpm
Exhaust only: 78kw @ 3,500 & 250Nm @ 2,500 (Gained 11% Kw & 6% Torque)
Exhaust and tuning: 114Kw @ 3,000rpm & 376Nm @ 2,500rpm (Gained 63% Kw & 60% Torque)

The kw and torque curves really speak for themselves and there are other very important benefits from this.
1. The torque curve is very flat and you now have maximum torque between 2,000 and 3,000rpm where before it was only between 2,000 and 2,500rpm. This gives you a more usable torque than before. You also now have 129 torque more on 1,500rpm which is really ideal.
2. The EGT’s run very stable and very safe. The alarm is set to 680deg pre turbo but I could not even get to 650deg under extreme loads and 520deg was the highest recorded temp on the dyno.
3. Overall the drivability of the vehicle has changed completely. You can now actually enjoy driving it!

What does it cost and what do you get for your money?
The cost for this conversion works out around R24,000 and for that, you get the following:
1. A Madman EMS2 with EGT, water temp and water level monitoring.
2. A 3” stainless free flow exhaust built by Viper exhaust in Kempton Park from the turbo right to the back.
3. Die diesel pump gets a boost compensator and is calibrated to the correct settings to give the optimum amount of fuel and to advance the timing a bit better.
4. Injector pressures are pushed up a bit to give better atomization and better combustion.
5. The turbo boost is pushed up from 0.4 bar to 0.8 bar
6. Lots of tuning……

Costs not covered by this conversion are things like a worn out diesel pump and/or injectors, damaged turbo or anything else not mentioned in the list above.
Doing a complete pump overhaul and installing new injector tips can push the prices up by another R6,000 to R7,000 but this does not happen often.

TD42 turbo kits:

Now there are loads of N/A Patrols that are running great and the owners are very happy with them as is, but there are some that want that extra oomph without costing them a fortune. Rebuilding a TD42 with proper turbo spec internals, having the pump redone with a boost compensator, new injector tips and the list goes on is VERY expensive and is an overkill for many and not fit for everyone’s pocket.

Now I am in the process with the help of the all famous Mr. Tinus Lotz (aka the Turbonator) in casting our own top mount turbo manifolds and also our own stainless air boxes that are replicated off the standard ZD30/TD42T pickups via the help of Peter Connan as well as Tinus. The air boxes should fit like a glove under the bonnet and no holes need to be drilled or anything. The snorkel will also just connect up with no problem.
Keeping this in mind I am doing some tests with a couple of turbochargers and if everything goes as planned I will be able to have a “bolt on” turbo kit available to fit any TD42 N/A engine. This kit will run with no intercooler as the aim is to just get out of “donkey zone”.

This will NOT be a high performance upgrade and is aimed to give around 20 – 25% gains in power with the option to upgrade later in necessary.
The turbo will be good enough to run between 0.4 bar and 0.8 bar so will be suited for power like mentioned above and also for possible later upgrade with turbo spec internals if necessary.

The kit will typically include the following:
1. T3 spec turbo with oil feed and return pipes
2. Top mount cast manifold
3. Turbo Downpipe
4. Already made up boost pipe from turbo to intake manifold
5. Already made up intake pipe from the air box to the turbo inlet
6. Stainless steel air box
7. Madman EMS with EGT & Water temp monitoring (this is optional but HIGHLY recommended)

Total cost for this I am aiming for is R24,000 – R26,000 but will be able to see within a couple of weeks/months as I will have to do a trial run first to see what the actual costs end up being.

Watch this space for further updates……..

JP, I am not sure of this actually. I have heard that the TD42 and the TB45 can share a manifold but I actually do not know if this is true.

I dont think the 4.8 will work, but baybe someone can confirm this?

I can confirm that the TD42, TB42 and TB45 all use the same exhaust manifold gasket.

Unfortunately, I am not sure of the TB48...

I'm going to watch this space! My TD42 has a headgasket leak, well I hope it is only the gasket. Coming off 10th July, after that I will be in the market for a "bolt on" turbo kit like this for the TD42 N/A!
