Morning all, a friend of mine is doing the trip with the McCarthy crowd with his Patrol GQ single cab 4.2 non turbo, he has 10jj rims and 33" muddies on he wants to know what spares he must tag along since he will be the only Patrol, he did a Lesotho trip many moons ago with a Defender and took half a garage full of spares with , I tried to convince him to join the Patrol family but he cannot arrange leave in Oct

Jules, my view is that preemptive maintenance is a lot better than fixing things in the bush (or mountains in this case).
Most important for me would be to take bloudraad & tyre repair kit

Then in terms of dates, it seems we just need to hear from Dawie (Ossewa) if he is okay with departing from Gauteng on 5 Oct rather than 3 Oct, then we are set on shifting the date to this.

Then Errol has no excuse but to join us!

Jules, we have done quite a bit of 4x4ing in the last couple of years and most of us never say no to a challenging obstacle and no one has had a major failure of any kind so far. Now I am setting aside things like water damage to the engine and things that could be avoided by the driver.

1.One thing I always carry with as a spare is a free wheel hub!! I have had one fail on me once and have seen a couple fail on other Patrols on our trips.
This is a MUST for me as it almost ruined my Jamboree challenge one year.
2.Extra set of fan belts as this can also make you go nowhere if the belt fails that runs on the water pump.

Besides that, the usual spanners and pliers should be fine

Is this failure more specific to the auto locking hubs? Or are manual locking hubs just as prone to failure?

Fanus I think if you lock the auto hubs before doing aggressive 4x4 ing and service them every 100 000km they should last for ever....I hope
