I drove one for a few months. on it's own it drives quite nice but towing uphill it quickly slowed down to 80km/h towing from 110km/h. Once I got 6.2 km/L from Pretoria to Kimberley. Normal average was about 5.2km/L and my worst was 3.8km/L towing an extremely heavy trailer to Moloto and aslo got that on the dune trip. Just to compare fuel consumption I drove an interlink MAN to Windhoek and back and averaged 3.5km/L with a full 50 Tonnes there and empty back. So a a daily it is cheaper to drive an empty truck.

I have long gone made it out to myself that the Patrol is not my daily drive - rather my "project" i.e. over landing and trail car. A project has a budget in my world so I just need to make sure that my budget is adequate to take me away and bring me home.

To me driving a (petrol) Patrol is like having an expensive cell phone contract with the most upmarket handset included - you decide to own it, and thus you pay for it. Not that our Patrols are the biggest culprits in terms of fuel consumption - I am using a 4l Prado from work and guess what - also very heavy on juice.

However, what driving our Patrol the off-road trailer behind it up the thick sand from Thabong to Mabua - the last thing on my mind is a debate about fuel consumption....what a pleasure...

Cheers (en sterkte by die petrolpomp)

Hi Guys..i also own a 4.5 or two and its not for every day use,but its fully insured and my premie is R380.00/month
and it was cash sales...no HP but if you go and buy a late model vehicle which are high risk vehicle I reckon your
insurance is going to be +- R2500.00/month and most likely on H/P.........so my 4.5 gussler is actually very economical

That's true. Some people get 10km/L but pay R10 000 pm on their vehicle, others use R4000 fuel a month but the car is at least theirs.
One thing that also bothered me was that the kind of 4x4ing I did and wated to continue doing I kept getting that huge diff hung up on things and a lot of the times the situation was not as simple as picking a different line. Adding 33" would only lift it 25mm and would make a huge power difference.

I don't mind the loss of power driving to and from ..but hey man when you put those 33" on and you get to an obstacle that 25 mm makes a huge difference

Keep tracking bud.....!!! :blonde:
