Stiff gears / harde ratte

Post by Ds J »

It is not the same vehicle but the lesson may be helpful. In the Land Rover Discovery (series 1), Land Rover South Africa commonly used Castrol VMX 80. Using that lubricant, the gears were terribly difficult to shift when the transmission was cold. After some research we discovered that the R380 gearbox was designed to be used with MTF 94, which is a very different lubricant. Immediately upon switching the lubricant to MTF 94, all shift problems disappeared. So lubricant can be a big factor.

"atf" - automatic transmission fluid?

Mine battled to go into some gears when cold. The gear stick also had a lot of play on it. It wasn't the oil, but the nylon bush that the gear stick fits onto/into that was worn out. Replaced it about 2-3 years back with a Nissan original part and problem solved. Gear stick was firm and slipped into gear beautifully.
