Richtersveld 2016

Post by Johann 1984 »

Hi Guys,

I am running a white-water-rafting trip from Vioolsfrift across the border into Nam on the Orange river. It is a 4 day trip on the river. After that, seeing that I'm there, I want to spend a few days in the Richtersveld camping. I have never been there. I do not know the road conditions. Does someone have advice on nice camping spots? I will be taking 80L of extra diesel in Jerry cans. That is on top of the 135L already in the belly of the Patrol. I know this is probably as secluded as it gets. Should I take a chance with only one sparewheel? Can someone perhaps tell me about the tire situation there? Any route advice and travel times between campsites?

Warm Regards

Johann

Johan I have never camped there but invest in a good tire pressure monitoring set up and you will be fine . Make sure you have a proper plug repair kit and perhaps a spare tube then you will be fine with tires .....we tend to drive then broken .

I was there once. No punctures on 2ply tyres at the time. Awsome trails throughout the park. The dirt road to the park is serious corrigated due to mining in the area. De hoop is next to the river and is a beatifull camping spot. Dont be put of by the mining activity in the beginning. Once your deeper in the park its beautiful. :mytwocents:

Hallo Johan
Ons was 'n maand gelede daar. Jy moet inbespreek by Sendelingdrif.

Johann

I noted that you are going to do the trip sometime in what is left of 2016.
It will be extremely hot there in mid-summer. Expect 40Deg plus temperatures.

Potjiespram, De Hoop, Richtersberg and Kokerboomkloof are all very nice camp sites, but you need to take lots of your own water. You will have to book the camp sites in advance. The world heritage site is also a worthwhile visit. Be prepared to do down on your knees to look at the small things. Scorpions can be a problem, so take a UV torch with, it lights them up very well.

As far as tyres goes I did it with a single spare running all Hankook ATs with 2 ply side walls - no punctures. You have to be very careful with where you place your wheels as there are lots of sharp rocks which could destroy a side wall quite easily. If you have a second spare, rather take it with.

Looking at your rig should be able to wing it quite easily
Fuel wise you should be OK.

Have a wonderful trip.

Poitjiespram is a rustic camp. Showers & toilets werk.

Asook talle kokerbome.

In ALL gevalle jy moet EIE hout en EIE drinkwater saamneem.

Thanks for all the info guys... Will take 2nd sparewheel and extra compressor. How is the sandy parts next to the river? Apparently that jeep track gets quite thick and rough? I am in the Kalahari this weekend. Weather is surprisingly bearable.
