And love them I do Cedric

Starting to gather all of the parts for turbo my donkey cart.
So far I've got the manifold and turbo, now I'm busy sourcing the intercooler (90%), Madman, aneroid fitment & pump mods, making up a dump pipe with a small trick to it so hopefully better flow, exhaust system and all the little extras.

Going to do something a bit different for a bonnet scoop for the top mount.
Going to source a Land Cruiser 70/79 series scoop adapted for the Patrol, seen them on Ozzie trolls and it looks really wicked (even if I am soiling my troll with LC parts :tease: )

Stripped the entire intake system yesterday and measured up to start planning everything for the build.
Came up with a cunning plan for the air box, hopefully it works.
Going to either source a K&N or BMC high flow cone filter that will have sufficient surface area that will hopefully fit into the existing pre-filter cyclone unit (with some mods), that way there's minimal fabrication work and the mating to the snorkel isn't disturbed.
Otherwise I will fabricate a larger diameter air box in the same position to house the filter.

I'd love to have it all done in time for Christmas (would be like choo choo the red nose Patrol :rolling: ) but with plans to go out of town on holiday, it will most likely only happen Jan/Feb 2017.
The aim is to have it done before my birthday in April next year...sort of a "to me, with love from me" kind of deal :rolling:

Sweet !!!

In my opinion the ZD30 airbox we have in our aftermarket turbo'ed TD42's is very inefficient. In fact, I think even in the ZD30 motors the breathing could be a lot better with a differently designed airbox. I have been doing a lot of research on this and am busy with a design for my Iron Maiden.

I needed a new airfilter the other day, so took a chance and removed it and then drove to the a few km like that ( I do have a snorkel, so a tiny bit of protection...  )..... but holy smoke !!.... That turbo spooled up super quick!! response time was incredible !!!

I put another filter in and went back to the old feel.... BIG difference !!!

I hear you.
The ozzies love to change out to 4 inch on the intake side and reduce onto the turbo to allow for more air.
They even go as far as to make up a 4 inch snorkel, but that's just too much OCD even for me to handle

I might just go the 4 inch direction from the airbox to the turbo.
I'm not chasing big kW's (130kW is the goal) but I would like the turbo to spool easier and more freely.
I rather want more response than big boost/power... that and I want the motor to last until my kids are out of the house in 20 years time :rolling:
That's also why I'm going to try a little trick with the dump pipe which might do the trick.
I've come across a fair bit of information that suggests to separate the waste gate port from the impeller port by way of a divider plate, so that turbulent airflow from the wastegate operating won't interfere or cause back pressure on the impeller.
Mostly for high performance petrol turbos, but it's worth a try

Don't wanf to be difficult here, but any money spent enlarging the pipe fdom the filter to the turbo inlet will be like flushing it down the toilet if you don't enlarge the snorkel at the same time.

The snorkel is already a greater restriction than that pipe.

Also, i wouldn't recommend a free-flow filter on an off-road vehicle. Just a higher-capacity paper filter.
Mag ons ons kenniskry met lekkerkry aanhoukry.

Dustin,

Yes its very interesting what the Ausies do. Remember that they run 1.5 bar + vs the 0.8 bar you are going to run so it will make no differance in my opinion to inlarge the intake to 4".
The engine's demand for loads of air only comes to play when the boost is heigh, so spoolup will probably not be any better than with a normal filter system.

If you want early boost you have to go for a smaller turbo, thats the easiest. :mytwocents:

100% Peter and Michael.

I also looked at the situation with the snorkel being the restricting factor.
There's no way I'm prepared to hack a good portion of the fender up to get a 4 inch in there... I cringe just thinking about taking any sharp object to my baby. I'll have to close my eyes as I cut the bonnet for the scoop, but that just has to happen unfortunately.

Filter wise, I'm still not sold on going bigger on a replacement paper filter.
Many, many moons ago I was into motorsport (group N) racing and I've modified my fair share of petrol performance cars as you do when you're young and dumb. I pushed 172kW on a Citi Golf sleeper (looked almost stock) Took mighty big ones to drive that thing, let alone keep it in a straight line
The filter plays a big part in performance gains.
I think when I mentioned a cone filter, you guys imagined a VW Citi golf with tinted windows, dropped suspension, body kit, low profile mags and a Ricoffee can for a exhaust tip :rolling: :rolling: :rolling:
I'm not going for your Autostyling no name special brand of filter. I've got a contact who builds rally cars exclusively for all of the big names. He's an agent for some big brands, who are all real world proven in the dirt and grime of rally.

I'm still toying with options and I've got plenty of time to decide.
I'll see when I get closer to crunch time which way I swing on that one.

Thanks for the input guys, much appreciated

Dustin i had a k+n filter inside my aircleaner on my 4.8....worked amazing until you smell a bit of dust and that was it blocked .....had to clean every 1000km on tar even ....
The donaldson tipe filter that comes with the 3l and 4.2 out standard works Michael makes 180kw and 500nm with that one ....it fits and snorkel lines up ......my 2 cents worth :mytwocents:
