This is the design I found that I want to replicate (when the time is right).
The wheel carrier swings with the big barn door.
90% of the weight is carried by the bumper and the plate on the door carries minimal weight, so no more cracking doors.
Also you can bolt on longer carrier stubs or with and offset, so you can carry a larger tire than 33".

Thoughts ?

Should this be moved to another place in the forum ? Moderators input ?

Post by Tinus lotz »

Let's start a new thread for the spare wheel carrier on the bumper.

Josh, maybe you should post your pics here as well?

I like the Idee of the door and arm working together. Much less of a story.

Me too. Tjhe disadvantage of course is that the weight is always on the spindle and bearing setup, whereas with a seperate arm and clamp setup the weight is mostly on the clamp when travelling.

But if, like a lot of guys, you use the Golf stub-axle setup, it should easily carry the load.

Have any of you guys had any experience with the towbar mounted spare wheel carriers? I'm considering having a friend with a welding shop make me something like that, as it will be much less expensive than buying a bumper. Building a bumper is also out of the question as I have too many unfinished projects waiting already!

I would be interested in exploring this. My bumper that I built does not have space to mount the spare wheel the traditional way (on the RH corner) so I will either have to keep it as is on the door, or look into a tow bar design.
Obviously, it will have to be designed in such a way that the rear door can still open.

I would be interested in something similar, if I am not mistaken most tow bares is rated to carry 90kg, but the forces on gravel and 4x4 might be a different story...........
