Pirelli vs Nankang

Post by Dustin »

Hi all

I need some advice please.

I finally found a GU Patrol 4.2D !!! :blonde: :blonde: :blonde:
A massive thank you Tinus you legend
I'll be finalizing the deal this weekend or early next week, schedules permitting, and then I'll be plastering pics of the new addition all over the forum

The troll's tires are...tired, and I must buy a set to get her through road worthy and make sure it stays on the road when I want it to.
I'd love to go out and buy a set of BFG KM2's or Cooper STT's, but that's just not going to happen right now.

I am going to go 285/75R16 or 33" in old terms.
I got prices from Mufasa Tyres in CT, as I bought a set of Maxxis AT's for my Fortuner years back and they were the best on price and service, so I'll stick with what works.
And I'm going MT's as we all know the best all terrain tire is a mud terrain tire.

I have 2 options that suite the budget at this point.

1. Pirelli Scorpion MTR - R2950 each
2. Nankang N889 M/T - R2905 each

The burning question is does anyone have experience with these tires and what was the performance & lifespan of each ?

If anyone knows of a set of 285/75R16 muddies laying around somewhere, please drop me a PM.

I can't find any info on the sidewall construction.

The best I can find is someone's post on a UK Land Rover forum :
" I haven't used them personally, but Dave ie Blknght had access to them prior to the Cape Trip in 09 and at least one car completed the trip with them, also a friend had them on a Pajero and would run them again if he was able to get them, he rates them over the km2 which he now has. "

I run the mudstars 285/75 R16
They have served me very well.

They are great offroad, they remind me of my KL71's.

One word of warning... they are very KEK on wet tar, have you ever drifted a patrol... I have!

In the dry (tar) they stick like hell.

Mine are on 50000kms now & they still have about 40% tread left.

They are good value & work well, but there are better tyres out there.

Thanks for the feedback JP.

Funny you should mention drifting a Patrol.
I was telling someone a few days ago about my experience in my previous Patrol.
I was running BFG A/T's on it. I came to hate those tires with a passion.
On dry stuff they were great, but the slightest bit of mud and they became racing slicks.
On wet tar I ended up drifting all over the place like I was riding a dunk camel and on occasions when I had to jump on the brakes suddenly they would slide out of control.
At least they gave good mileage, but that's all as far as I'm concerned.

The new owner put Dunlop MT2's on.

quote " They are great offroad, they remind me of my KL71's. "  ..... no no no JP.... KL71's stick like shhhhh to a blanket in the wet. My Kumho KL71's didn't give 90 000km life span, but my safety was worth the shorter life span !!
