Re: Leaving the front hubs locked
I know of one advantage of having the front hubs locked.....You can engage 4x4 while on the move and disengage .Your whole front power train is rotating at the same speed as the transfer box ,take your foot off the acc and pull the short
lever gently and get back on the gas

Re: Leaving the front hubs locked
Hi! I've never locked my front hubs since I bought the 1 month old 2006 model 4.8 GRX. I do engage 4x4 whenever I hit dirt road in order to lubricate the front dif. Is it really necessary to manually lock the front hubs to get everything lubricated properly?
Could you also comment on another 2 questions?
1. There is an Ausie youtube where a guy talks about the 10 things you might not have known about the Patrol, one being the fact that you can engage and disengage 4x4 at higher spreads than if they are auto locked. Is this true?
2. When it is auto locked, do the front wheels have traction in reverse gear? May be it is only intended for real tough terrain, not often encountered driving the best 4x4 by far!

Re: Leaving the front hubs locked
Hi Oebie
You dont have to lock the hubs in order to lube the front diff, the only atvantage of keeping it in auto is you dont have to get out to disengage the hubs.......you just put it in 2H and reverse a couple of meters. You will hear the hubs click
1. Im not sure on this, but makes sense as the front diff will already be turning the same speed as the rear diff when the bubs are engaged
2. When the bubs are on auto and you engage 4x4 they will stay locked regardless if you reverse or not. They will only disengage when you reverse in 2H. I only manually lock them when doing a trail or doing proper offroading, but have also left them in auto a couple of times.
Hope this helps

Re: Leaving the front hubs locked
GOOD DAY GENTLEMEN ,
For those of you that need to know , auto free wheel hubs should not be engauged above about 10km/h . They work on a system similar to a ONE WAY BEARING .
When the side shaft turns and the wheel is stationary , the auto locking system activates to drive the wheel . The same applies in reverse . If they are locked pulling forward , when you stop and go in reverse , they will unlock and then lock in reverse the moment there is a bit of rear wheelspin . Engaugeing 4x4 at speed with auto free wheel hubs is really not a good idea ! You have a transfer box running at speed , suddenly trying to engauge a stationary drive shaft ! The 4x4 selector ring has dog teeth which do not like to engauge at vastly different speeds ! NO , YOU DON"T WANT TO BREAK DOG TEETH IN A GEARBOX !
If the hubs are manually locked , 4x4 can be selected up to 100km/h . Over 100km/h is risky , due to possible different tyre pressures causing a slight difference in rolling diamatre , which will cause instability very very quickly ! Patrols can take up to 600KW through the standard drive train without modifications , but you still need to treat them the right way !
Enjoy guys , we'll see you out there !

Re: Leaving the front hubs locked
Your front and rear props need to be running damn close to same speed for the TC to move from 2H to 4H. My Hardbody will not go from 2H to 4H if I had forgotten to lock the front hubs. I also felt at high speed, that the TC holds back to engage to 4H till the props are matched speed.
I am pretty sure that the Patrols and most Nissans would work on the same principles. I have managed to change at speeds as high as 130km/h, And that still on the tar as I am about to go onto gravel.

Re: Leaving the front hubs locked
But that's with manual locking hubs, with auto hubs. What will spin up first to get the front diff up to speed before the system is fully engaged....
