GQ SWB - 2.8 turbo diesel

Post by DMH »

Hi All

Was chatting to a chap who told me his uncle has one of these! His daughter had bought it in the UK and then brought it down many years ago.

I don't know anything more about it, other than he's been trying to buy it off his uncle for years.

It sounds like quite the mythical creature in our part of the world? Just wanted to know what your thoughts were on these. And whether I should go and find out more about this beast.

Do you come across GQ SWB's much?

They are very scarce. I would check it out if I was you.
I cant really comment much on what to look out for mechanically wise, but sure some of the more clued up guys can comment.

Cool.. well let's leave that out until after I see it and get some pics!

What I'd love to know now is just how scarce it is, and how good a vehicle/engine that was. And how much you'd value a decent example like that. R75k? More?

There was one for sale in Middelburg (tvl) last year. Cant find the thread now. Also with a rd28 engine(no turbo). With leaf springs front and back.

An ex-friend of my wife's had one in the 90's. I have never actually seen one, but have seen three shorty GQ's locally with normally-aspirated TB42's (although one was converted to Lexus).

A F I K the GQ shape never came with 2.8 engines .. only 4,2 [Diesel and Petrol]
The one that was on Gumtree was [is] the shape of the Safari (Like Lobo) and that had the 2.8 engines [L 28; LD 28 and RB 28]

The one I am talking about, that was advertised last year was a 260 series.

"The 260 series was a Spanish-built version of the 160 (easily spotted by the rectangular headlamps) sold in Europe and was available in SWB and LWB with L28, SD33 and RD28T engines. The SD-engined version, at least in the UK market, had a 24-volt electrical system. Nissan Ibérica-built Patrols also received a Spanish-made Perkins diesel engine and Spanish transmission to meet local content regulations.[3] It also helped Nissan Ibérica amortize plant investments. The 260 Patrol later received a facelift with a new grille similar to that of the Y60 series which succeeded this generation elsewhere. Spanish production continued until 1994 for export and until 2002 for the Spanish domestic market."

Seems it could be a mq and not a gq.

Oom Mac, according to the manuals it did come with the 2.8, but it was probably never sold here with that engine.

There was one on Gumtree last year, a 2,8 [non turbo] diesel .. it had the round lights like LOBO. The rear section was painted black, and was removable .. the seller had picts with and without the rear "canopy' .. can't remmber the year model .. it was younger than LOBO though [Lobo is 1981]

So finally got some pics. And the vehicle is for sale!
May go view this weekend.

Alas the RD2.8T engine apparently seized and was removed but is still there. Had put in a normal RD28 but that was taken out too. So no engine in it currently.

So this does indeed have the rectangular headlights.. grille not nearly as sexy as the GQ.

So chaps, what should i offer? Old man wanted R40k but i was told it would be highly negotiable.
Also, was told it's not a major mission or cost unseizing a motor if youre lucky. This true? Worst case scenario?

Cheers
