Aircon condenser fan replacement

Post by ricster »

My aircon condenser fan has developed a bearing noise, and before it seizes up completely on me I have simply pulled the plug out. I have another fan similar in size to the Nissan original that I've had laying around in my garage for a while, but I have a bit of an electrical problem now....

The Nissan fan ( the one in the photo ) has 4 wires connected to the female plug that then connects to the male plug that runs to somewhere in and around the Patrol.

Can I fit the new fan I have that only has 2 wires ( Pos & Neg ) and more importantly ..... what wires connect to what?

I will reuse the same ( female ) plug and just solder the new fan wires to the relevant points.

Alternatively.... Can that motors bearings be replaced? The Nissan fan motor is a sealed unit with pressed rivets holding the fan motor casing together.

I definitively don't want to buy one from Nissan... :surprised: :surprised:

Im guessing that this fan might be a two speed fan which would explain the four wires?

Hmmmm.... or 3 speed?? one wire negative and 3 for speed settings??

I have no clue, I've only heard it whizzing in circles at one speed

I've just dug through the manual for the 4.2. It does not seem to be a multiple speed fan. It just seems to have two terminals for positive, and two terminals for ground...

You should be able to test it easily enough.

If it's variable speed, it should turn at one speed with only one postivie terminal connected, and turn faster with both connected. However, the electrical schematics don't indicate any additional relay for both positive terminals. As such, I assume it just uses two terminals per pole.

Ahhh.... interesting !!! Thanks Ian.

Does it say anything about what colour wires are ( + ) and ( - ). There is a black ( I assume it to be negative), and then there is a white with blue and a pink one. I cant see the 4th one on the pic. I'll check the colours properly tonight.

Cedric,

The colours are indicated on the wiring diagram. Except, that according to the wiring diagram, there should be two white-blue (W/L on the diagram) wires, and two black (B on the diagram). Strange. However, this might be the "harness wiring" - ie not the wires going to the fan, but the wires in the rest of the harness running to the relays.

Alternatively, get the polarity from the plug. The testing diagram shows the following:

1: Disconnect the plug.
2: View the fan plug from the front with the "guide" piece at the top.
3: The two positive terminals for the fan should be at the top.
4: The two negative terminals for the fan should be at the bottom.

I was also thinking about this - there is a good chance that the fan is an inductance fan (ie: brushless), and this may explain why there are two positive and two negative terminals. ie: The fan may not run at all without all terminals connected.
