Thanks for the report Alex, glad you shared the car issues as I am planning to visit that area in 2017 hopefully and deed to know what to expect.....specially the fuel issue.
At this stage I only have 127L of fuel if you combine my main and sub tank which will not be enough at all for those long stretches.

Epic trip! I saw a picture of a tyre repair. Any problems with the tyres other than punctures?

We did not use one. We had 4 Kumho MTs on.
Our travel companions also had two spares and had four BFGs ATs on. They did no have any punctures.
We had one puncture that I managed to put a plug in. As fluke had it we were stopping at Palmwag at which time I heard it blowing down. Only seconds later the TPMS alarm went off.
