EGT for 3.0l

Post by gupster »

Hi all. I now have a Mad Man EGT installed on a 2005 3.0, as well as the new Turbo. I have been trying, unsuccessfully, to find what the values of the temperatures must be. The probe was fitted into the manifold between 3rd and 4th cylinder, ie pre turbo. Ibrahim, the guy that installed it, said the maximum he got it to was 655. Is that too high?
The truck is pulling a lot better now with the new Turbo but I will still have to watch for over boost. Finances a bit low now, but will fit a boost gauge later on.

Many thanks.
Have Troll, will travel.

655 in my opinion is a max temp. You don't want to go over that. The 3.0 guys will be able to give you more info that my old school diesel brain, but depending on the power you are getting from it now a slight adjustment on the fueling or boost may just fine tune the variable vane turbo to get the sweet spot between too mush boost/too little boost or too much fuel/too little fuel.

Barry, like Cedric said the 3.0 guys will have a better idea of max EGT's. I recon 650 should be the safe max on that engine.

Steves Auto Clinic in Centurion will tell you that 750c is o k as maximum. DONT go there. Set the alarm on 650. and then know that you can overrun that in extreme occasions [overtaking and you need to make it quick .. but not longer than a minute or two
Monitor and make mental note of the running temp in the different conditions you drive in.
If the temo start running a bit higher under sam conditions as before .. CLEAN THE INTERCOOLER
And if you dont have an intercooler yet ?? Get one.
Oh .. and throw out those CATS .. they also cause the engine/turbo to run hotter [more hot virri taal puriste]
Use only Caltex Delo 400 oil on that engine. Change oil every 10,000
Love that Trollie

Normal low carbon steel start going from a body centred cubic structure to a face centered cubic structure as soon as it starts crossing 723 degrees celcius. This start turning it from perlite to austenite. Austenite (solid solution austenite is past 910 degrees celcius) is where you heat steal for tempering. Annealing ext. This is where it becomes hard. But if you cool it down quickly. It turns to maltensite. Then it becomes brittle. So imagine your engine going from 300 to 800 and back to 300degrees in seconds while you drive. What does it do to you components. Luckely pistons are not made of pure iron. But it consits of atleast 53% iron. Thats why going higher then 650 is no good. At 650 nothing changes. It just expands and cools down without any molucaler or atomic effets.

So yes. If that doesnt convince you. Then try google

Thanks Cedric, Oompie Michael and Joshua for your input. Joshua, you have just aged me 10 years, but I can see the science. Will set the alarm to 650 and get out and push if it goes higher. He he.
Put the truck through COR today so will register it tomorrow or Fri. I will also post some pics of the 2 trolls together and hope the new one will be able to get 27 African countries under its belt as the old one did,

Kind regards

Sjo Josh, kom die proffessor nou sterk deur in jou :oldtimer:

Very usefull info there and really makes you wonder how the Amarok 2.0TDI can handle 780deg EGT's.....it baffels me
I know someone who borrowed my VCDS cable to check his Amarok's EGT's and he confirmed these numbers.

After he did a chip on it the numbers went up to 820deg+, but he removed it right away as it was really high temps

This is why many people think that if you turbo a diesel its going to break.... The turbo is not what breaks the engine, but high EGT's from over fueling/faulty injector. A NA diesel can even run hotter that a turbo engine when not propperly tuned.

I have done a test now on mine. I upped the boost on my Patrol to 1bar and it spikes to 1.1 bar with matching fuel setting. The EGT now runs cooler than ever. Did a very very steep hill in Solomon Mahlangu this morning keeping it flat at 1bar boost in 5th at 120km/h for about 3min and highest reeding was 623deg
