Michael, net 'n vragie: is daar 'n olie seel op die override-knop (wat jy draai met die wielspanner)? Anders help dit mos nie om silicon aan die ander kant op te sit nie?

Ek weet die manual hubs op my Y60 het nie 'n seel op die draai-kant nie, dus gebruik ek nie silicon aan die ander kant nie en was ek nog skrikkerig vir olie in plaas van ghries. Maar dis 'n heeltemal ander meganisme...
Mag ons ons kenniskry met lekkerkry aanhoukry.

Pieter, ek dink hy het n seel daar. Ek het dit juis getoets toe ek die hub housing skoongemaak het......hy is water dig en nie n druppel water kom deer na die over-ride knop toe as jy hom vol maak met water. Ek het al drie die bubs wat ek het so getoets en nie een het daar gelek nie.
Ongelukkig kon ek nie daai gedeelte uit strip nie, (wel e het nie probeer nie) maar ek neem maar aan hy moet n seel he.

Ja die olie ipv grease gaan nie almal se keuse wes nie, maar ek het mar gereken dit kan nie skade doen nie en dit is die moeite werd om te toets

My enigste bekommernisse met olie IPV ghries is eerstens dat die olie kan uit lek. As jy baie olie gebruik, kan dit dalk die ghries in die wiellaers verdun, maar as jy oordeelkundig te werk gaan behoort dit nie 'n probleem te wees nie. Tweedens dink ek as mens olie gebruik gaan jy meer gereeld onderhoud moet doen?

Dit is waar wat jy se en ek is oor presies dieselfde goed bekommerd.
Ek is darem so bietjie gerus dat die olie nie genoeg is om by die bearings uit te kom nie, ek het baie min gebruik en het dit met my vinger aan gesmeer so niks drup uit as jy die hub onderste bo sal hou. n Moontlikheid is ook dat die olie op een of ander stadium nie meeral die gedeeltes gaan smeer nie en net op een plek gaan le.

Die onderhoud is n bekommernis en dit is natuurlik hoekom grease meer sin maak in daai aspek. Ek is ook meer in guns van n dun grease soos CV grease, maar wil net graag die olie toets om te sien of die Ausies se teorie waar is of nie. Klink of die Ausies meer gefocus het of hoe die hubs funktioneer met olie vs grease, hulle teorie is dat die olie hom baie gladder laat werk.

Ek sal oor 5,000km die hubs oop maak vir inspeksie en dan weer op 10,000km om te kyk hie die olie gevaar het.

Guys on the oil versus grease debate, on the Land Rovers, the problem of the front swivels leaking was more or less perennial (as they are normally oil filled). After a discussion with one of Shell's engineers we swapped to using a thixotropic grease. Essentially it is a grease that turns into an oil when it is placed under pressure and then reverts to a grease when the pressure is removed. The one we used was Shell Alvania GC 00. It worked very well. I am not sure whether this would be the correct application for it but it is worth considering… The only problem being that you can only buy it in 20 L drums – well, when I last checked some years back. It is also used extensively in worn transmissions, for reasons that it is probably not very difficult to understand.

Ok just to follow up on this thread, I have inspected my hubs after it has been serviced and lubed with oil instead of grease.
After the service I have been through Namibia, done Buffalo Gorge as well as the river trip.....about 10,000km.
The result is awesome, auto bub engages every time and looks just like the day I serviced them.

Also here is a video clip I made just to show you how to test if your auto hub is in working order or not, takes less than 1min to test and you dont need to remove the wheels or anything. Simply jack the wheel up you want to test.
