Maybe the odo stopped recording at some stage..?
The seller also mentioned the following to me yesterday: "Die ref en speedo meters werk nie so lekker nie."

Then he also confirmed that it was a petrol engine originally, second owner had vehicle for few months then engine seized, then engine was replaced with a td42.
I haven't heard of patrol petrol engines giving problem before?

No, according to him the TD42 replaced the original petrol engine, and then seized after 2nd owner had vehicle. Engine was then redone. According to him it is because the original radiator was to small for the engine.

IMHO, you cannot sell a Patrol for 120 with speedo not working so lekker and odo been tamperred with, or not working so lekker either.

This is what I suggest you do:
Take the vehicle and owner with you to Graham
Graham will tell you everything that is wrong and what it will cost you to fix it up. Vanessa will work the clip board with the list of items wrong and estimated fees.
This is a monetary amount that you subtract from 120.
Lets say it will cost you 40. Then offer him 80.

The add says R95k..... so its a fair price in my humble opinion. The rev counter I think will have some difficulty working properly i think without the correct adjustments. When I rode in Tour de Frans's V8 Patrol ( ex TD42 ) the rev counter works on different revs .... I think Frans would be able to give good first hand advice on this. Speedo.... hmmmm... possibly the same reasons??

If it was me buying it, I'd buy it at between R80-85k, purely due to the mishmash of motor vs mileage vs repairs etc. I would then spent the money and turbo that motor, after having opened the motor and looked at the pistons, sleeves and rings. (SLEEVE PROTRUSION BEING THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO CHECK)
This would be a relatively cheap mission, if all is good with the motor and head. Assemble with new bearings ( relatively cheap ) and Nissan headgasket ( worth spending the money on due to 22.7:1 compression ratios )

If when finished and one has spent an extra R30k or even R40k for that matter, then one has a brilliant Patrol with all bells a GRX has, with a beast of a motor that you know is in perfect condition. So in total for around R 120k you have the best diesel Patrol around.

That TD42 motor is a bastard to work on, trust me I know only too well !!!, but if the head is ok and the block is ok and the pistons are ok then any other stuff that could need replacing would be a minor cost. The rings for TD42 are identical to the TD27.... and are cheaper too !! If I recall the bearings are also the same..... and the pistons are the same ( if they need replacing ). The labour will be the most expensive item, unless you do it yourself.

Just as a reality check

I have seen many 4.5 GRXs of that age selling for between 80 and 100. But with the important difference of all of them being in good condition.

What is the difference here?

You've got engine replaced (alreayd some risks there), and not all the moving parts not working well anymore (speedo, odo etc).
If this was a TB45 with the same issues, the price would have been 60 max.
So just because it has a TD42 inside (and this being a replacement, rather than a native 4.2), it is worth 95?

Given the issues to be sorted, and the asking price of 95, I would not pay more than 80 max.

Alex, that is true my friend, and I'm not knocking you ( cause I know you and me understand each other.....   .... sometimes written things sound different than what they actually say....   ) but the TD42 motor is a slightly more sought after motor pushing the price up slightly higher than the 4.5 petrol. Keep in mind that we generally don't buy a Patrol for resale, the prospective new owner would have a vehicle ( after giving it the once over ) that is incredibly reliable motor wise and comparatively fuel efficient with the advantages of using any fuel however diluted with paraffin from any African country.

Any conversion is going to have niggles for sure, and I'm sure you will agree to that, but you have gotten all the niggles sorted out on your beast of a Patrol, and you love driving it all over the place.... and its reliable.... ok a little thirsty maybe.....   . Did you spend a lot of extra money on that motor (ok true you didn't really have too many choices due the ZD passing on to the ZD heaven), but you now have the vehicle that is you. I cannot imagine Alex in any other Patrol.... and so you will be able to climb the sand dunes and use a little more fuel, and that diesel will not climb the same dunes, but will use a little less fuel.... its a compromise over what one wants to spend on a vehicle to make it their own.
